Bai Ling

Bai Ling is a Chinese American actress and musician born on October 10, 1966, in Chengdu, China. She initially acted in Chinese productions before transitioning to American cinema, where she gained international recognition. She played prominent roles in feature films such as Red Corner, The Crow, Anna and the King, Taxi 3, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Southland Tales, and Crank: High Voltage. She is also recognized for her award-winning performance in the 2004 horror thriller Dumplings.

Bai grew up in Chengdu as the daughter of a People's Liberation Army musician and a literature teacher who also worked as a dancer and stage actress. She began performing in elementary school shows during the Cultural Revolution. After middle school, she performed labor work in Shuangliu and later joined the People's Liberation Army in 1978 as an artist soldier in Tibet, entertaining in musical theater and briefly serving as a nurse. In 1981, she joined the People's Art Theater of Chengdu, becoming a professional stage actress.

Her performance in the stage play Yueqin and Little Tiger caught the attention of director Teng Wenji, leading to her film debut in On the Beach. She appeared in several Chinese movies before achieving major acclaim for her role in The Shining Arc as a young woman with a psychological disorder. In 1991, Bai moved to New York as a visiting scholar at New York University's film department, later acquiring a visa that permitted her to reside in the United States until becoming a U.S. citizen in 1999.

After relocating to the United States, Bai appeared in television shows such as Guiding Light and landed her first major American movie role in The Crow (1994). In 1997, she starred alongside Richard Gere in Red Corner. Her performance in the film earned her the National Board of Review Freedom for Breakthrough Female Performance award and the San Diego Film Critics Society Award for Best Actress. Because Red Corner criticized human rights abuses in China, her Chinese citizenship was revoked.

Bai continued her film career with roles in Wild Wild West and Anna and the King (1999). In 2004, she returned to Chinese cinema in Fruit Chan's Dumplings, winning Best Supporting Actress awards at both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards. That same year, she received praise for her performance in The Beautiful Country. In 2005, Bai served on the jury at the 55th Berlin International Film Festival, appeared on television programs such as Entourage and VH1's But Can They Sing?, and was featured in deleted scenes for Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

In subsequent years, Bai appeared in Shanghai Baby, Lost, Love Ranch, Crank: High Voltage, and A Beautiful Life. She earned accolades for her performance in The Gauntlet (2013), winning Best Actress at the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood and the Asians On Film Festival. She later starred in The Key (2014) and served on the Mumbai Film Festival jury. In 2017, she won another Asians On Film Festival award for the short film To Pimp a Butterfly. She reunited with Fruit Chan for The Abortionist (2019), earning a Golden Horse Award nomination, and appeared in independent horror films including Exorcism at 60,000 Feet, Unspeakable: Beyond the Wall of Sleep, and Jack Be Nimble, for which she won a Milan Gold Award.
