Bryan Cranston

Bryan Lee Cranston is an American actor celebrated for his versatile portrayals across television, film, and theater. He reached global stardom as Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher turned drug lord in the crime drama series Breaking Bad. His performance earned him widespread critical praise and four Primetime Emmy Awards for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Cranston first achieved prominence as the father Hal in the sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, a role that brought him three Emmy nominations. Throughout his career, he has earned seven Primetime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a Golden Globe Award, as well as Academy Award and BAFTA nominations.

Cranston was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 7, 1956, to a radio actress mother and an actor father. Raised in Canoga Park, he spent part of his youth living on his maternal grandparents' poultry farm in Yucaipa, California, after his father left the family. Cranston graduated from Canoga Park High School and earned an associate degree in police science from Los Angeles Valley College in 1976. An elective acting course he took in college inspired him to pivot toward a drama career.

Before breaking into screen acting, Cranston worked multiple odd jobs, serving as an ordained minister, security guard, waiter, and camera operator. He gained early acting experience in San Fernando Valley regional theaters before securing television work in the 1980s, including a role on the soap opera Loving from 1983 to 1985. During this period, he also provided English voice dubbing for anime under a pseudonym and performed voice work for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

In the 1990s, Cranston secured recurring roles, including dentist Dr. Tim Whatley on Seinfeld, and featured in films like Saving Private Ryan and That Thing You Do!. His major television breakthrough arrived in 2000 when he landed the leading role of Hal in Malcolm in the Middle, which ran until 2006 and allowed him to direct several episodes.

Cranston's dramatic turning point came with Breaking Bad (2008–2013), where he also served as a producer and director. Following its success, he starred in major films such as Drive, Contagion, Argo, Godzilla, and Trumbo, earning an Academy Award nomination for portraying screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.

On stage, Cranston won a Tony Award for playing President Lyndon B. Johnson in All the Way, a role he reprised for an HBO film. He later won a second Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award playing Howard Beale in Network. Cranston has also co-created and starred in series such as Sneaky Pete and Your Honor, authored a bestselling memoir, and contributed voice work to major animated films.
