Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger, born Diane Heidkrüger on 15 July 1976 in Algermissen, West Germany, is a German actress and former model. Early in her film career, she earned worldwide recognition and was awarded the Trophée Chopard at the Cannes Film Festival. Over her career, she has performed in English, French, and German film and television productions.

Raised in a Catholic family, Kruger was brought up alongside her younger brother, Stefan, by her mother, Maria-Theresa, a bank clerk, and her father, Hans-Heinrich, a computer scientist and former cinema projectionist. Enrolled in ballet classes from age two, she trained at the Freese-Baus Ballettschule in Hildesheim, taking additional classes at the Royal Academy of Hanover and attending summer sessions at the Royal Ballet School in London. Following her parents' divorce when she was 13 and a subsequent knee injury, she ended her ballet plans and returned to school.

In 1992, at age 15, Kruger won the Elite Model Look national competition in Hamburg and signed with Elite Model Management. Moving to Paris and later New York, she was hired for advertisements by luxury brands including Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior, and Louis Vuitton, while appearing on runway shows and covers for publications such as Vogue Paris. By the late 1990s, she gradually stepped away from modelling to focus on acting.

After advice from filmmaker Luc Besson and actor Guillaume Canet, Kruger studied acting for two years at the Cours Florent in Paris. She made her feature debut in the 2002 television film The Piano Player. Her breakthrough roles arrived in 2004 when she starred as Helen of Sparta in the epic war film Troy and played Dr. Abigail Chase in the heist film National Treasure, a role she later reprised in its 2007 sequel. She also appeared in Joyeux Noël in 2005 and Copying Beethoven in 2006.

In 2009, Kruger played a German actress turned Allied spy in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, receiving Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. She subsequently co-starred in Mr. Nobody, the thriller Unknown, the historical film Les Adieux à la Reine as Marie Antoinette, and the film adaptation of The Host. From 2013 to 2014, she starred as Detective Sonya Cross on the FX crime drama series The Bridge.

In 2017, Kruger made her German-language debut in Fatih Akin's In the Fade, winning the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress. Her later projects include the spy thrillers The Operative and The 355, the thriller Out of the Blue, and David Cronenberg's The Shrouds. Beyond acting, Kruger has served on juries for the Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and Angoulême film festivals, served as a global brand ambassador for companies such as Jaeger-LeCoultre, L'Oréal, and Calvin Klein, and is fluent in German, English, and French.
