About Liam Neeson

William John Neeson, born on 7 June 1952, is an actor from Northern Ireland who is regarded as one of Ireland's greatest film actors. With a film career spanning more than 40 years, his movies have grossed over US$11.7 billion worldwide. His career accolades include nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and two Tony Awards, as well as a Volpi Cup win. In 2000, he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Neeson was born in Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, to primary school caretaker Bernard "Barney" Neeson and cook Katherine "Kitty" Neeson. Raised Catholic alongside three sisters, he attended St Patrick's College from 1963 to 1967, where his interest in drama began. During his youth, he took boxing lessons at the All Saints Youth Club, winning several regional titles before stopping at 17. In 1971, he enrolled at Queen's University Belfast to study physics and computer science before leaving to work various jobs, including as a forklift operator for the Guinness Brewery and a lorry driver.

Neeson began his professional acting career in 1976 when he joined the Lyric Players' Theatre in Belfast for two years. He made his screen debut in the 1978 film Pilgrim's Progress. After moving to Dublin to perform at the Project Arts Centre and Abbey Theatre, filmmaker John Boorman cast him as Sir Gawain in the 1981 Arthurian film Excalibur. Neeson subsequently moved to London and later Hollywood, appearing in early film roles such as The Bounty (1984), The Mission (1986), Suspect (1987), The Dead Pool (1988), and Darkman (1990).

His major breakthrough came when Steven Spielberg cast him as Oskar Schindler in the Holocaust drama Schindler's List (1993). His performance earned him nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe. That same year, Neeson made his Broadway debut in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie, earning a Tony Award nomination. He subsequently headlined period dramas including Nell (1994), Rob Roy (1995), Michael Collins (1996)—for which he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor—and Les Misérables (1998), while also starring as Oscar Wilde in the 1998 play The Judas Kiss.

In 1999, Neeson played Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, a role he later reprised through voice and live-action cameos across various Star Wars media. During the 2000s, he appeared in films such as Gangs of New York (2002), Love Actually (2003), Kinsey (2004), Batman Begins (2005), and The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy (2005–2010). On stage, he received a second Tony Award nomination for his portrayal of John Proctor in a 2002 Broadway revival of The Crucible.

Beginning in 2008, Neeson established a new career phase as an action star through the Taken film series (2008–2014). He continued in the action thriller genre with films like The A-Team (2010), The Grey (2011), and Cold Pursuit (2019), along with four collaborations with director Jaume Collet-Serra: Unknown (2011), Non-Stop (2014), Run All Night (2015), and The Commuter (2018). His other notable film work includes Silence (2016), A Monster Calls (2016), Widows (2018), and Ordinary Love (2019).
