Tyler James Williams

Tyler James Williams is an American actor and rapper who initially gained widespread recognition as a child performer. He is best known for portraying a young Chris Rock on the sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, starring in the Disney Channel television movie Let It Shine, and appearing on the horror drama series The Walking Dead. More recently, he has received broad critical acclaim for his performance on the mockumentary comedy series Abbott Elementary.

Williams was born on October 9, 1992, in Westchester County, New York, and grew up in Yonkers, New York. His mother worked as a counselor, while his father served as a teacher and retired police sergeant. Williams was raised alongside two younger brothers, Tyrel Jackson Williams and Tylen Jacob Williams, both of whom also pursued careers as actors.

Beginning his acting career at four years old, Williams made early television appearances on programs such as Saturday Night Live and the long-running children's series Sesame Street. In 2000, he took over the voice role of Bobby on the animated show Little Bill. During his youth, he also made guest appearances in projects such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Two for the Money, and the television series Hi-Jinks.

Williams achieved a major breakthrough in September 2005 when he was cast as the lead character in the hit sitcom Everybody Hates Chris. He starred on the show until May 2009, earning a Young Artist Award in 2007 for his performance. Following this role, he appeared in True Jackson, VP, voiced Jason Rusch in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and held a main role on the comedy series Go On. In 2012, he played Cyrus DeBarge in Let It Shine, contributing rap performances to several tracks on its featured soundtrack.

Throughout the 2010s and early 2020s, Williams expanded his film and television resume. On television, he joined the cast of The Walking Dead as Noah and later starred in Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. His feature film credits include the independent satire Dear White People, the historical drama Detroit, the romantic comedy The Wedding Year, the feature film The Argument, and the biographical drama The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

Since 2021, Williams has starred as Gregory Eddie on the ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary. His portrayal has garnered major industry accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

In his personal life, Williams was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2017 after experiencing symptoms for three years, undergoing multiple surgical procedures as part of his treatment. His brother Tyrel shares the same health condition. In 2023, his brothers publicly described Williams as an active ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
