Jessica Barden

Jessica Barden (born July 21, 1992) is an English actress best known for playing Alyssa in the Channel 4 and Netflix dark comedy The End of the F***ing World (2017–2019) — a breakout role that won her a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit award and international recognition.

Born in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, Barden began as a child actress, appearing in My Parents Are Aliens and, from 2007, as Kayleigh Morton in Coronation Street. She earned early notice for Tamara Drewe (2010, a London Film Critics’ Circle nomination) and Joe Wright’s Hanna (2011), and went on to roles in The Lobster (2015), Far from the Madding Crowd (2015), Penny Dreadful (2016) and Jungleland (2019). Her performance in Scarborough (2018) brought a British Independent Film Award nomination.

More recently she starred in ITV’s You & Me (2023) and joined the Dune universe as the young Valya Harkonnen in HBO’s Dune: Prophecy (2024). She is set to portray the comedian Victoria Wood in Becoming Victoria Wood (2026). Barden married director Max Winkler in 2021.

The End of the F***ing World became a global cult hit for Netflix, and Barden’s performance as Alyssa drove much of its acclaim, earning her an NME Award for Best TV Actor in 2020 on top of her 2015 Screen International ‘Star of Tomorrow’ and 2018 IMDb Breakout Star recognition. Equally at home in film, prestige television and comedy, she has built a reputation for playing sharp, unsentimental young women, and her move into the Dune franchise marked a shift toward big-budget genre television that broadened her international audience further.
