Jessica Barden

Jessica Amy Barden is an English-American actress who first gained prominent recognition as a child performer before establishing a wide-ranging screen and stage career. She is best known for portraying Alyssa Foley in the Channel 4 and Netflix comedy-drama series The End of the F***ing World. Over the course of her career, she has earned critical recognition for her performances across feature films, television dramas, and theatrical productions.

Barden was born on July 21, 1992, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, into a working-class household raised by a prison officer father and an accountant mother. At age three, her family relocated to Wetherby, West Yorkshire, where she attended Wetherby High School alongside her two brothers. Influenced by her father's passion for cinema and school activities, she developed an interest in acting, enrolled in local drama classes, and worked as a television extra prior to leaving school at age fifteen.

Her professional career launched in 1999 with a role on the children's television series My Parents Are Aliens, followed by appearances in shows like No Angels and The Chase. In 2007, Barden made her feature film debut in Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution and secured a recurring role as Kayleigh Morton in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street, appearing until 2008. She made her stage debut in 2009 playing Pea in the play Jerusalem at the Royal Court Theatre, which later transferred to London's West End.

During the early 2010s, Barden expanded her film portfolio with roles in Tamara Drewe, which earned her a nomination from the London Film Critics' Circle, and the action thriller Hanna. Between 2012 and 2016, she appeared in various feature projects, including Comedown, In the Dark Half, Mindscape, Lullaby, and Far from the Madding Crowd. Her television credits during this period included the BBC One miniseries The Outcast, the television movie Ellen, and the series Penny Dreadful.

Her breakthrough came with her starring performance in The End of the F***ing World from 2017 to 2019. Following this success, she starred in the 2018 film Scarborough, receiving nominations for Best Supporting Actress at the British Independent Film Awards and the National Film Awards UK. Her achievements led to her being named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and winning an IMDb Breakout Star Award.

In subsequent years, Barden appeared in music videos, the film Jungleland, and the Australian drama series Lambs of God. She landed leading parts in films such as Holler and Pink Skies Ahead, and later starred in the Netflix series Pieces of Her and the ITV romantic comedy You & Me. Her later projects include casting in Dune: Prophecy, the film An Unsuitable Game, a documentary titled Becoming Victoria Wood, and a musical feature with the band Real Lies.

In her personal life, Barden married filmmaker Max Winkler in March 2021, and they subsequently welcomed two children. She has spoken publicly about her personal experiences with anxiety and therapy, as well as her perspectives regarding the portrayal of working-class backgrounds within the acting profession.
