David Bowie

David Robert Jones (1947–2016), known professionally as David Bowie, was an English singer, songwriter, and actor. Recognized as among the most influential musicians of the 20th century, he was known for his frequent reinvention, visual presentation, and distinct stagecraft. Over his lifetime, his record sales were estimated at over 100 million worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Born in Brixton, London, Bowie grew up in South London, attending Burnt Ash Junior School and Bromley Technical High School. Encouraged by his father to pursue entertainment, he took up instruments including the recorder, ukulele, tea-chest bass, piano, and saxophone during his youth. His early life was strongly influenced by his maternal half-brother, Terry Burns, who introduced him to modern jazz, Buddhism, Beat poetry, and the occult. Bowie also studied art, music, and design before launching his music career.

Bowie began performing in 1962 with local bands including the Konrads, the King Bees, the Manish Boys, and the Lower Third. To avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees, he adopted the stage name David Bowie in the mid-1960s. After releasing several unsuccessful singles and a self-titled debut album, he achieved his first commercial success in 1969 with "Space Oddity," a UK top-five single released through Mercury Records.

His major commercial breakthrough arrived in 1972 during the glam rock era with his Ziggy Stardust persona and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Throughout the 1970s, Bowie adopted various personae, including Halloween Jack for Diamond Dogs (1974) and the Thin White Duke for Station to Station (1976). He explored diverse musical styles ranging from soul on Young Americans (1975) to art rock, electronica, and ambient music on his Berlin Trilogy: Low, "Heroes" (both 1977), and Lodger (1979).

In 1983, Bowie achieved his greatest commercial success with the album Let's Dance. From 1988 to 1992, he fronted the hard rock band Tin Machine before resuming his solo career in 1993, during which he experimented with industrial, jungle, and drum and bass genres. He retired from touring in 2004, returning from a recording hiatus with The Next Day in 2013. His final studio album, Blackstar, was released two days before his death in January 2016.

Outside of music, Bowie acted in films such as The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), Labyrinth (1986), and The Prestige (2006). He was also a painter, writer, and digital pioneer who engaged directly with fans through his website BowieNet. Over his career, he earned eleven UK number-one albums, six Grammy Awards, and four Brit Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
