Ashley Judd

Ashley Tyler Ciminella, known professionally as Ashley Judd, is an American actress born on April 19, 1968, in Granada Hills, Los Angeles. She grew up in a family of performing artists as the daughter of singer Naomi Judd and the half-sister of country music singer Wynonna Judd. Her father, Michael Charles Ciminella, worked as a marketing analyst in the horse racing industry. Raised primarily in Kentucky, Judd attended multiple schools before studying French and minoring in anthropology, art history, theater, and women's studies at the University of Kentucky. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in French, a mid-career Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, and pursued doctoral studies at UC Berkeley.

Judd began her professional acting career on television in 1991 with a guest appearance as Starfleet officer Robin Lefler on Star Trek: The Next Generation. From 1991 to 1994, she held a recurring role as Reed on the NBC drama series Sisters. She made her feature film debut in 1992's Kuffs before landing her first starring role in Victor Nuñez's Ruby in Paradise (1993). Her performance as the title character Ruby Lee Gissing earned positive reviews and established her as a prominent leading film actress.

Throughout the mid-to-late 1990s, Judd appeared in several high-profile films, including Smoke, Heat, and The Passion of Darkly Noon in 1995. In 1996, she co-starred as Marilyn Monroe in the television film Norma Jean and Marilyn and appeared in the box-office success A Time to Kill. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, she achieved major success starring in successful thrillers and dramas such as Kiss the Girls (1997), Double Jeopardy (1999), Where the Heart Is (2000), Someone Like You (2001), and High Crimes (2002).

In 2003, Judd performed on Broadway as Maggie the Cat in a revival of Tennessee Williams's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. She received praise and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the 2004 film De-Lovely. Her later screen credits include the television series Missing (2012), the films Dolphin Tale (2011) and Dolphin Tale 2 (2014), the action film Olympus Has Fallen (2013), and the role of Natalie Prior in the Divergent film series from 2014 to 2016. Outside of acting, she served as the advertising face for brands including American Beauty cosmetics and launched fashion lines with Goody's Family Clothing.

In addition to her entertainment career, Judd is actively involved in global humanitarian efforts and political activism. She has served as a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador and a Global Ambassador for YouthAIDS, traveling internationally to promote health, poverty prevention, and women's rights. Judd has also been an active political campaigner for Democratic candidates and served as a delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention. In her personal life, she was married to Scottish racing driver Dario Franchitti from December 2001 until their divorce in 2013.
