Butler is also well known for starring as Secret Service agent Mike Banning in the Has Fallen action thriller film series, voicing Stoick the Vast in the How to Train Your Dragon animated franchise, and portraying Erik, The Phantom, in the 2004 film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.
Butler was born in Paisley, Scotland, to Margaret and Edward Butler, and was raised Catholic in a family of Irish descent. His family briefly lived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, before his mother returned with him to Scotland following his parents' separation. He attended St Mirin's & St Margaret's High School as head boy and later studied at the University of Glasgow School of Law, where he served as president of the law society. During his youth, he also attended the Scottish Youth Theatre. Following his graduation, he worked as a trainee lawyer at a firm in Edinburgh, but he was dismissed shortly before qualifying.
At age 25, Butler moved to London to pursue an acting career, working various odd jobs before securing his first professional stage role at age 27 in Steven Berkoff's production of Coriolanus. He followed this with performances in Dear Frankie, The Game of Their Lives, and Beowulf & Grendel.
