Rufus Sewell

Rufus Frederik Sewell is a British actor who has established a multi-decade career across film, television, and theatre. Born in October 1967, he has become widely recognized for playing complex figures and antagonist roles across a variety of genres. Over his career, he has appeared in major feature films, acclaimed stage productions, and high-profile television series.

Sewell was born to Jo, a Welsh artist and classically trained pianist, and William John Frederick Sewell, an Australian-born animator who worked on the Beatles' animated feature film Yellow Submarine. His parents divorced when he was five, and his father passed away five years later. His mother subsequently lived at a property in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, that previously belonged to the parents of writer Dylan Thomas. Sewell was educated at Orleans Park School in Twickenham until 1984, later attending West Thames College before training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

His breakthrough year arrived in 1993 when director Michael Winner cast him in the feature film Dirty Weekend after seeing him perform at the Criterion Theatre. That same year, Sewell originated the role of Septimus Hodge in Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia. Early in his professional career, Sewell frequently performed in Shakespearean productions, portraying Hotspur in Henry IV, Part 1, Fortinbras in Hamlet, and the title role in Macbeth.

In feature films, Sewell gained recognition for his villainous roles in productions such as A Knight's Tale, The Legend of Zorro, Bless the Child, Helen of Troy, and The Illusionist. His other film credits include Carrington, Dark City, Amazing Grace, The Holiday, The Tourist, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Judy, The Father, and Old. He also starred in the independent drama Downloading Nancy, appeared alongside Dwayne Johnson in Hercules, and voiced a character in Blinky Bill the Movie.

On television, Sewell received a BAFTA Television Award nomination for his portrayal of Petruchio in the BBC's 2005 adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew. His television credits include Middlemarch, Cold Comfort Farm, Arabian Nights, Charles II: The Power and the Passion, John Adams, Eleventh Hour, The Pillars of the Earth, Parade's End, The Pale Horse, and the lead role in the detective series Zen. He later gained prominent television roles portraying John Smith in The Man in the High Castle and Lord Melbourne in Victoria, followed by appearances in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, the Netflix drama The Diplomat, and the film Scoop as Prince Andrew, Duke of York.

Sewell earned widespread acclaim for originating the role of Jan in Tom Stoppard's 2006 play Rock 'n' Roll, winning an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Play and earning a Tony Award nomination. His audio work includes narrating Russell Thorndike's Doctor Syn stories for BBC Radio, performing in Stoppard's radio drama Darkside, and recording eleven James Bond audiobooks.

In his personal life, Sewell has been married three times. He was married to Australian fashion journalist Yasmin Abdallah from 1999 to 2000. He later married producer and scriptwriter Amy Gardner in 2004, with whom he has a son, before divorcing in 2006. Sewell also has a daughter with Ami Komai, and in July 2024, he married American actress Vivian Benitez.
