She later attended Thomas Mills High School in Suffolk. In 1982, her family relocated to Sydney, Australia, where she attended Mosman High School and North Sydney Girls High School. Before pursuing acting full-time, she worked as a papergirl, negative cutter, deli manager, model, and assistant fashion editor.
Watts made her feature film debut in the Australian drama For Love Alone (1986).
