Following her parents' divorce, she was raised in Snowmass, Colorado, and Pacific Palisades, California, by her mother and her mother's longtime partner, actor Kurt Russell. She graduated from the Crossroads preparatory school in Santa Monica in 1997 and chose to pursue acting rather than attending New York University.
Hudson made her feature film debut in the 1998 comedy-drama Desert Blue, followed by supporting roles in 200 Cigarettes, Gossip, Dr. T & the Women, and About Adam. Her breakthrough arrived with her performance as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe's musical drama Almost Famous (2000). In addition to acting, Hudson co-founded the activewear brand Fabletics with TechStyle Fashion Group in 2013. She authored the non-fiction lifestyle books Pretty Happy (2016) and Pretty Fun (2017). In 2024, she signed with Virgin Music Group, released singles including "Talk About Love", "Live Forever", and "Gonna Find Out", and released her debut studio album, Glorious.
