Daniel Craig

Daniel Wroughton Craig is an English actor who gained international fame for playing the fictional secret agent James Bond. His portrayal of Bond spanned several films, including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die. Beyond the James Bond franchise, Craig has established a prolific career across theatre, television, and film, earning widespread recognition for his work in both dramatic roles and major cinematic projects.

Born on 2 March 1968 in Chester, Cheshire, Craig is the son of Carol Olivia, an art teacher, and Timothy John Wroughton Craig, who served as a midshipman in the Merchant Navy and worked as a steel erector before becoming a pub landlord. His parents divorced in 1972, after which he moved to the Wirral Peninsula with his mother and sister. Craig attended several schools, including Hilbre High School and Calday Grange Grammar School, and played rugby union for Hoylake RFC. He began acting in school plays at age six and developed an interest in serious acting after visiting Liverpool's Everyman Theatre. In 1984, he was accepted into the National Youth Theatre and moved to London, later graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1991.

Craig began his professional acting career on stage before making his screen debut in the 1992 drama film The Power of One. Throughout the early 1990s, he appeared in various television series, such as Zorro, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Heartbeat, and Sharpe's Eagle, as well as stage productions including Angels in America at the Royal National Theatre. He achieved his breakthrough role in 1996 as George "Geordie" Peacock in the BBC drama serial Our Friends in the North.

Following his breakthrough, Craig appeared in a diverse array of film and stage roles. His feature film credits from this era include the biographical drama Elizabeth, Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon, The Trench, Some Voices, and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. He continued to gain prominence for his performances in Sam Mendes's crime film Road to Perdition, the biographical drama Sylvia, and Matthew Vaughn's crime thriller Layer Cake. In 2005, Craig appeared in Steven Spielberg's Munich and the BBC television film Archangel.

In 2006, Craig made his debut as James Bond in Casino Royale. Although his casting initially drew public controversy regarding his physical appearance, his performance received critical acclaim and earned him a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. That same year, he appeared in the drama Infamous and provided voice work for the animated film Renaissance. Craig subsequently starred in a wide variety of feature films, including The Golden Compass, Defiance, and David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

In addition to his screen achievements, Craig has maintained an active presence in theatre throughout his career. He made his Broadway debut alongside Hugh Jackman in A Steady Rain in 2009 and later returned for Broadway revivals of Betrayal and Macbeth, as well as playing Iago in a 2016 production of Othello. In recent years, Craig gained further acclaim playing detective Benoit Blanc in the Knives Out film series starting in 2019. He also starred in the 2024 romantic drama Queer, earning nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, Critics' Choice Movie Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
