Javier Bardem

Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem, born on 1 March 1969 in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain, is an acclaimed Spanish actor whose career spans over three decades. Coming from a family deeply rooted in Spanish cinema, he has earned widespread recognition for his work in both Spanish and international projects. Over his career, Bardem has received numerous major accolades, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Critics' Choice Movie Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, seven Goya Awards, a Cannes Film Festival Award, and two Volpi Cups.

Bardem was born to actress Pilar Bardem and José Carlos Encinas Doussinague. His mother raised him and his elder siblings, Carlos and Mónica, after his parents separated shortly after his birth. Coming from a line of performers and filmmakers dating back to the earliest days of Spanish cinema, his relatives include actors Rafael Bardem and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro, and director Juan Antonio Bardem. Although raised around sets and theaters—making an early television appearance in 1974 in El pícaro—Bardem initially preferred painting, studying it for four years at Madrid's Escuela de Artes y Oficios. He eventually turned to acting jobs to support his painting before committing to acting full-time.

Bardem gained notice in a small role in The Ages of Lulu (1990), leading director Bigas Luna to cast him as the male lead in Jamón jamón (1992) alongside his future wife, Penélope Cruz. He established himself in Spanish cinema throughout the 1990s with roles in films such as Golden Balls, Running Out of Time, Boca a boca, Live Flesh, and Perdita Durango, which marked his first English-speaking role. He achieved international renown portraying Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in Julian Schnabel's Before Night Falls (2000), earning his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and becoming the first Spaniard to receive a lead actor Oscar nomination.

Following his international breakthrough, Bardem starred in John Malkovich's The Dancer Upstairs (2002), Mondays in the Sun (2002), and The Sea Inside (2004), winning Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival for his portrayal of Ramón Sampedro in the latter. In 2007, his performance as assassin Anton Chigurh in the Coen brothers' crime film No Country for Old Men won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Spaniard to win an Oscar. He followed this success with performances in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and Alejandro González Iñárritu's Biutiful (2010), winning Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival and earning another Oscar nomination for the latter.

Bardem's career encompasses auteur dramas and major blockbusters. His film projects include Eat Pray Love, the James Bond film Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Mother!, Everybody Knows, Dune, Dune: Part Two, The Little Mermaid, The Good Boss, Being the Ricardos, F1, and The Beloved. For his performance as Desi Arnaz in Being the Ricardos, he earned his fourth Academy Award nomination. On television, he played José Menendez in Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, earning two Primetime Emmy nominations, and starred as Max Cady in Apple TV's Cape Fear.

In addition to his acting honors, Bardem received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. In his personal life, he married actress Penélope Cruz in 2010, and they have two children together. Bardem also serves as an ambassador for Greenpeace for the protection of Antarctica, a role he assumed in January 2018.
