Ricardo Darín

Ricardo Alberto Darín is an Argentine actor, director, and producer who is widely recognized as one of the most prominent and prolific figures in Argentine cinema. Born on January 16, 1957, in Buenos Aires, he grew up in a family with deep roots in the entertainment industry, as both his mother, Renée Roxana, and his father, Ricardo Darín Sr., were actors. He is of Italian and Lebanese heritage. His parents divorced when he was twelve years old, and his father later passed away from cancer in 1989.

Darín made his initial stage appearance at the age of ten alongside his parents. By the age of sixteen, he had established a regular presence on Argentine television through shows such as Alta comedia and Estación Retiro under the guidance of producer Alberto Migré. During the 1980s, he gained widespread popularity across Argentina as part of a group of young actors known as the galancitos. He went on to star in television productions including Estrellita mía in 1987 and Rebelde in 1989, before shifting toward comedic television roles in the early 1990s, most notably in the hit remake Mi cuñado from 1993 to 1996.

Throughout his television career, Darín maintained an active presence in theater, performing in plays like Art and making his stage directorial debut with the 1990 production Pájaros in the nait. His early cinematic work primarily targeted youth audiences before he transitioned into more mature dramatic film roles, earning praise for projects such as Perdido por perdido, The Lighthouse, and Same Love, Same Rain. His major screen breakthrough arrived in the 2000 film Nine Queens, in which he played a con artist operating during Argentina's financial crisis.

Following that success, Darín starred in Son of the Bride in 2001, which earned an Academy Award nomination. He subsequently appeared in films such as Kamchatka, Moon of Avellaneda, and the 2005 psychological thriller The Aura, which earned him a Silver Condor Award and a Clarín Award for Best Actor. In 2006, he was granted Spanish citizenship. He made his feature directorial debut in 2007 with The Signal—completing a project left behind by the late Eduardo Mignogna—and starred in the drama XXY that same year.

In 2009, Darín played the lead in Juan José Campanella's The Secret in Their Eyes, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He received major honors from the Konex Foundation, including the Diamond Award in 2011 as the decade's most significant Argentine entertainment figure. His film work continued with titles like Carancho, Chinese Take-Away, White Elephant, and the 2014 box-office hit Wild Tales, which also earned an Oscar nomination. For his role in the 2015 feature Truman, he won the Goya Award for Best Actor.

In 2022, Darín portrayed prosecutor Julio César Strassera in Argentina, 1985, marking his fourth performance in an Argentine film nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in the 21st century. He was also cast as Juan Salvo in the Netflix television series adaptation of The Eternaut. In his personal life, Darín married Florencia Bas in 1988, with whom he has two children. He once turned down a role in the film Man on Fire due to his opposition to Hollywood's negative stereotyping of Latin Americans, and in 2016, he became a patron of the international screenwriters association DreamAgo.
