Born on June 5, 1971, in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, Wahlberg was raised Catholic as the youngest of nine children. His mother worked as a nurse's aide and bank clerk, while his father was a veteran of the Korean War. During his youth, Wahlberg participated in multiple violent and racially driven attacks, which resulted in a felony conviction. Following his parents' divorce in 1982, he divided his living arrangements between both parents.

Wahlberg briefly joined the pop group New Kids on the Block at age 13 alongside his brother Donnie before departing after a few months. In 1990, he established the hip-hop group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Their 1991 debut record, Music for the People, generated the chart-topping single "Good Vibrations." After making his screen debut in the 1993 television film The Substitute, he dropped his musical stage name and debuted in feature films with Renaissance Man (1994). He earned praise for his supporting performance in The Basketball Diaries (1995) and landed his first leading role in the 1996 thriller Fear. His portrayal of Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights (1997) brought widespread critical recognition. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Wahlberg starred in notable projects such as Three Kings (1999), The Perfect Storm (2000), Planet of the Apes (2001), and The Italian Job (2003).

In 2006, Wahlberg received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a police officer in Martin Scorsese's crime drama The Departed. He subsequently earned a Golden Globe nomination for starring as boxer Micky Ward in The Fighter (2010), while also receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture as one of the film's co-producers. Wahlberg achieved further commercial success in comedies such as The Other Guys (2010), Ted (2012), and Daddy's Home (2015), as well as two entries in the Transformers action franchise in 2014 and 2017.
