Olyphant was born on May 20, 1968, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and raised in Modesto, California. His father worked as a wine executive, and he is a descendant of the Vanderbilt family. During his youth, Olyphant was a competitive swimmer who reached the finals at the 1986 Nationals. He attended the University of Southern California to swim and pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After relocating to New York, he briefly performed stand-up comedy before completing a two-year training program at the William Esper Studio.
Olyphant began his professional acting career on the stage, debuting off-Broadway in 1995 in The Monogamist, a performance that earned him a Theatre World Award. In 1996, he originated the lead role in the play The Santaland Diaries. He soon transitioned to screen work with television pilot appearances and feature films, notably portraying one of the killers in the horror sequel Scream 2. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, he frequently played supporting and villainous characters in films such as Go, The Broken Hearts Club, Gone in 60 Seconds, A Man Apart, and The Girl Next Door.
His major breakthrough arrived when he was cast as lawman Seth Bullock in the HBO western series Deadwood, which ran from 2004 to 2006. Following this role, Olyphant secured lead parts in films including Catch and Release, Hitman, A Perfect Getaway, and The Crazies, while also playing the primary antagonist in Live Free or Die Hard. He later returned to television with a recurring role in the legal thriller Damages and eventually reprised his Seth Bullock character in Deadwood: The Movie in 2019.
From 2010 to 2015, Olyphant starred as Raylan Givens in the FX drama Justified, earning a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2011. He later reprised this role in the 2023 miniseries Justified: City Primeval. Alongside his dramatic projects, Olyphant displayed his comedic versatility with guest roles on shows like The Office, The Mindy Project, and The Grinder—winning a Critics' Choice Award for the latter—and co-starred in the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet.
In subsequent years, Olyphant appeared in feature films such as Snowden, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Amsterdam. His television work expanded to include appearances in Curb Your Enthusiasm, Fargo, The Good Place, and the character Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. In 2025, he starred in the FX series Alien: Earth.
