Bruce Willis

Walter Bruce Willis is a retired American actor recognized globally for his prominence in the action film genre. After gaining initial recognition on television in the late 1980s, he built a prolific screen career spanning more than one hundred motion pictures. He achieved international stardom as the central hero John McClane in the long-running Die Hard film series. Over several decades, he established himself as a high-grossing leading man through a mixture of action blockbusters, dramatic feature films, and comedic performances.

Born in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany, in 1955 to a German mother and an American military father, Willis grew up alongside three younger siblings. His family relocated to Carneys Point, New Jersey, after his father left the armed forces in 1957. Raised in a working-class household, he managed a childhood stutter by joining his high school drama club. Following his high school graduation, he held various jobs—including security guard, factory crew transporter, and private investigator—before studying drama at Montclair State University. He relocated to New York City in 1977 to pursue performing full-time while supporting himself through hospitality and television page work.

Willis secured his major breakthrough in 1985 when he was selected to co-star as detective David Addison Jr. in the television series Moonlighting, a role that earned him both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe. His film career escalated dramatically in 1988 with the blockbuster action feature Die Hard. Throughout the 1990s, he reprised his iconic role in successful sequels and starred in acclaimed productions such as Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, and The Fifth Element. Despite occasional commercial setbacks during this era, he closed the decade with major critical and financial hits including Armageddon and The Sixth Sense.

During the 2000s and 2010s, Willis maintained a diverse workload across genres and platforms. He earned an additional Emmy Award for a television guest appearance on Friends and took on varied roles in films such as Sin City, Unbreakable, Looper, Moonrise Kingdom, and Glass. Beyond traditional feature films, he lent his voice to animated characters, performed on Broadway in Misery, and appeared in commercial campaigns and music releases. During the latter part of his career, he appeared in numerous low-budget, direct-to-video productions.

In 2022, Willis officially retired from acting following a diagnosis of aphasia, which was later detailed as frontotemporal dementia in 2023. Over the course of his multi-decade career, his feature films accumulated billions of dollars at the North American box office, placing him among the highest-earning leading actors of his era. His achievements were honored with multiple People's Choice Awards, several Emmy and Golden Globe wins, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.
