Courtney attended Cherrybrook Technology High School, where he played rugby and participated in the drama club. He subsequently studied acting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, graduating in 2008. While in college, he took a ballet course, which he failed. He started his acting career as a teenager, making his screen debut in the 2005 short film Boys Grammar alongside Daniel Feuerriegel and Adam J. Yeend.
In 2008, Courtney appeared in the Australian television series Packed to the Rafters, followed by a guest lead role in All Saints, the comedy feature To Hell & Bourke, and several short films. His career expanded in 2010 when he played Varro for 10 episodes in Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Courtney subsequently moved into major Hollywood projects, starring alongside Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher in 2012 and portraying Jack McClane, the son of Bruce Willis's character John McClane, in A Good Day to Die Hard.
In 2014, Courtney appeared in I, Frankenstein and the Australian films Felony and The Water Diviner, as well as Unbroken, playing Hugh "Cup" Cuppernell. He also played Eric in Divergent, reprising the role in the 2015 sequel Insurgent. Working on Insurgent and Terminator Genisys simultaneously, he played Kyle Reese in the latter action film. In 2016, Courtney starred as Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad and appeared in the feature film The Exception.
Courtney performed on stage in 2017 as the title character in the Melbourne Theatre Company's production of Macbeth. In 2019, he played Wizz, a corrupt debt collector and main antagonist in the independent film Buffaloed, and appeared in Storm Boy. His 2020 projects include the Australian series Stateless, the film Honest Thief, and the animated film 100% Wolf. Courtney reprised Captain Boomerang in the 2021 standalone sequel The Suicide Squad and starred in the 2022 action thriller Black Site.
His recent work includes appearing in the action thriller series The Terminal List in 2022 and the 2023 American television series Kaleidoscope. In 2023, he also hosted the Australian reality competition series The Summit. In 2025, Courtney starred in the survival horror thriller Dangerous Animals, as well as the feature film The Fox, directed by Dario Russo, which premiered at the 2025 Adelaide Film Festival alongside co-stars Emily Browning and Damon Herriman.
Beyond his film and television projects, Courtney provided backing vocals on the song "All of a Sudden" by Pinch Hitter from their debut album. In his personal life, Courtney dated Australian actress Gemma Pranita for eight years until 2013, and later dated Mecki Dent from 2015 to 2022.
