Ryan Gosling

Ryan Thomas Gosling (born November 12, 1980) is a Canadian actor known for his performances in independent films and major studio features. His films as a leading actor have grossed over $4 billion worldwide. He has won a Golden Globe Award and received nominations for three Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, nine Critics' Choice Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award. In addition to acting, Gosling made his directorial debut with the 2014 fantasy film Lost River, released an album with his band Dead Man's Bones, and co-owns the Moroccan restaurant Tagine in Beverly Hills, California.

Gosling was born in London, Ontario, to Thomas Ray Gosling, a paper mill travelling salesman, and Donna Wilson, a secretary. His family were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he lived in Cornwall and Burlington, Ontario. His parents divorced when he was 13, after which he lived with his mother and older sister. In elementary school, Gosling faced bullying, struggled with reading, and was diagnosed with ADHD, leading to a year of homeschooling. Encouraged by his sister, he performed from an early age, singing at weddings, performing with an Elvis Presley tribute act, and joining a local ballet company. He dropped out of high school at age 17 to focus on acting.

At age 12, Gosling began his professional career after being cast in Disney Channel's revival of The All New Mickey Mouse Club, starring on the series from 1993 to 1995. Upon returning to Canada, he appeared in television series including Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Goosebumps, and Breaker High. He later played the title role in the adventure series Young Hercules from 1998 to 1999. Choosing to transition to film, Gosling made his feature debut in Frankenstein and Me (1996) and took a supporting role in the sports drama Remember the Titans (2000).

Gosling earned critical praise for his leading role in the 2001 drama The Believer, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. After starring in Murder by Numbers, The Slaughter Rule, and The United States of Leland, he achieved mainstream recognition as Noah Calhoun in the 2004 romantic drama The Notebook. He continued taking on diverse film roles, appearing in Stay and earning his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for Half Nelson (2006). He also starred in the thriller Fracture and the comedy-drama Lars and the Real Girl (2007), receiving Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for the latter.

In subsequent years, Gosling starred in films across multiple genres, including the romantic drama Blue Valentine, the comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, the political drama The Ides of March, and the action drama Drive. He appeared in the biographical comedy-dramas The Big Short and First Man, the action comedy The Nice Guys, and the musical La La Land, which earned him a second Academy Award nomination. His film credits also include the science fiction features Blade Runner 2049 and Project Hail Mary, as well as the fantasy comedy Barbie, which became his highest-grossing release and resulted in a third Academy Award nomination.

Off-screen, Gosling is a prominent supporter of several charities. In 2009, his band Dead Man's Bones released their debut self-titled album and toured North America. Gosling is in a relationship with actress Eva Mendes, his longtime co-star.
