She is best known for her television roles, including Dominika Petrova in House, the vampire Violet Mazurski in True Blood, detective Dianne Kubek in Wicked City, the alien Izel in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Zosia in Pluribus. Wydra was born on March 5, 1981, in Opole, Poland. Her mother, Irena, was a mathematics teacher, and her father, Józef, taught art. She has an older brother, Patrick, who became an accountant in London. In 1992, when she was 11 years old, her family emigrated to the United States and settled in Orange County, California, where her parents started a cleaning business. Her parents separated in 2012, after which her mother returned to Poland.

Wydra began her public career in modeling. In October 1997, she won the Elite Lee Jeans Model Look Contest. She subsequently featured in advertising campaigns for major brands, including L'Oréal, Armani Exchange, Levi's Red, Calvin Klein, Smashbox Cosmetics, Dooney & Bourke, Charles David, Urban Decay, John Frieda, and Kenneth Cole. Her modeling work also appeared on the covers of international magazines such as German Elle and Oyster, and she featured in a 2006 Nespresso commercial starring George Clooney.

She transitioned into acting in 2008 with roles in the comedy Be Kind Rewind and the drama Sugar, followed by a supporting part in the 2011 romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. Wydra achieved her television breakthrough playing Dominika Petrova in the medical drama House from 2011 to 2012, portraying an immigrant in a marriage of convenience with Dr. Gregory House. She then starred in the thriller film After in 2012 and the found-footage sci-fi film Europa Report in 2013.

From 2013 to 2014, Wydra gained wider recognition playing the vampire Violet Mazurski on the HBO series True Blood, joining the main cast for its final season. She went on to take recurring roles on Justified in 2014, Scorpion in 2014, and Quantico in 2017. She starred as detective Dianne Kubek in the 2015 crime series Wicked City, and appeared in Sneaky Pete and Twin Peaks in 2017. In 2019, she played the alien entity Izel in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In March 2024, Wydra was cast in the lead role of Zosia in the Apple TV+ science fiction series Pluribus, created by Vince Gilligan. She obtained the part after the casting team remembered her from a 2016 horror film and requested an audition. In 2026, her performance in Pluribus earned her a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Wydra lives in Los Angeles and is married to executive producer Chad Hamilton, with whom she has two sons.
