She began modeling at age eight, appearing in print advertisements for companies such as Limited Too and on book covers. While attending William Allen High School, she pursued art, piano, and vocal lessons, and participated in school theater productions. In 2003, she enrolled at Fordham University but chose not to attend after being cast in her feature film breakthrough.
Seyfried started acting on television as a teenager, appearing as an extra on Guiding Light before securing recurring roles on the soap operas As the World Turns and All My Children. Her breakthrough film role came in 2004 when she played Karen Smith in the teen comedy Mean Girls, earning an MTV Movie Award alongside her co-stars.
