He added the middle name Austin as a child actor to differentiate himself when joining the Screen Actors Guild.
Prior to Beverly Hills, 90210, Green had a recurring role from 1986 to 1989 on the soap opera Knots Landing as Brian Cunningham, a role he reprised in the 1997 miniseries Knots Landing: Back to the Cul-de-Sac. Producer Aaron Spelling cast Green as David Silver due to their similar personalities, incorporating Green's real-life interests in hip hop music and DJing into the script. In 1996, Green dropped Austin from his professional name to pursue a rap career, releasing the album One Stop Carnival, produced by Slimkid3 of The Pharcyde. Throughout the 1990s, he also guest-starred on television shows such as Growing Pains, Melrose Place, and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.
During the 2000s and 2010s, Green expanded his television career with regular and recurring roles. He starred as Luke Bonner on Resurrection Blvd., appeared on the sitcom Freddie, and portrayed Derek Reese on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. He played Metallo on Smallville, appeared on Desperate Housewives as contractor Keith Watson, and starred as superhero Callan in the film Cross. Green joined the sitcom Anger Management as a guest star in 2012 before becoming a series regular in 2013, and he starred as wedding band frontman Tommy in the TBS comedy series Wedding Band.
Green has also participated in several competition shows and reality television projects. In 2020, he competed as Giraffe on the fourth season of The Masked Singer and subsequently served as a panelist on its spin-off, The Masked Dancer. In 2021, he competed on season 30 of Dancing with the Stars alongside partner Sharna Burgess, placing 13th. Green later appeared on the Australian version of The Masked Singer as Crash Test Dummy in 2023 and competed in the HGTV series Totally 90s House in 2026.
In addition to acting, Green co-created the podcast ...With Brian Austin Green in 2017 and launched the podcast Old-ish in 2023 alongside Sharna Burgess and Randy Spelling. In his personal life, Green won the celebrity section of the Grand Prix of Long Beach in 2010. He has four sons from past relationships with Vanessa Marcil and ex-wife Megan Fox, as well as a son with his fiancee Sharna Burgess. Green supports charities including Generosity Water and the Search4Smiles campaign, and in June 2022, he revealed that he suffers from ulcerative colitis.
