Shannen Doherty

Shannen Maria Doherty (April 12, 1971 – July 13, 2024) was an American actress. She gained recognition for her television and film roles, notably playing Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210, Prue Halliwell in Charmed, Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie, Maggie Malene in Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Heather Duke in Heathers, and Rene Mosier in Mallrats. On July 13, 2024, Doherty died from cancer at her home in Malibu, California, at age 53.

Doherty was born in Memphis, Tennessee, to Tom and Rosa Doherty, and was raised in her mother's Southern Baptist faith. She attended the Lycée Français de Los Angeles, a private French-language school, graduating in 1988.

Her acting career began in 1982 with television guest appearances, including roles on Voyagers! and Father Murphy. That year, at age 11, she was cast as Jenny Wilder on Little House on the Prairie, appearing in 18 episodes during its final season. She voiced a role in the animated film The Secret of NIMH in 1982 and earned a Young Artist Award nomination for her guest appearance in Airwolf. Doherty later starred in the 1985 comedy Girls Just Want to Have Fun and played Kris Witherspoon in the drama Our House from 1986 to 1988.

In 1988, Doherty appeared in her first major film role in the dark comedy Heathers. She achieved worldwide fame playing Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210 starting in 1990, earning two Young Artist Award nominations before leaving the show in 1994. She starred in Kevin Smith's film Mallrats in 1995. In 1998, she was cast as Prue Halliwell on Charmed, playing the character for three seasons and directing three episodes prior to her departure in 2001. She also posed for Playboy magazine in 1993, 1994, and 2003.

Doherty hosted the candid-camera series Scare Tactics in 2003 and starred in the drama North Shore from 2004 to 2005. She produced and starred in the 2006 reality show Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty and appeared in TV movies such as Christmas Caper. In 2008, Doherty reprised her role as Brenda Walsh as a guest star on the spin-off series 90210. She competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2010, voiced characters in the web series Mari-Kari, and starred in reality shows such as Shannen Says and Off the Map with Shannen & Holly.

Her later projects included acting in the 2018 television series reboot of Heathers, the 2019 event series BH90210, and films such as Undateable John and Fortress. Outside of acting, Doherty served as an art director for Pasadena Magazine in 2009, formed the production company No Apologies, worked as a cosmetics spokesperson in South Korea in 1995, and launched her podcast, Let's Be Clear with Shannen Doherty, in December 2023.

Doherty was married to Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994, to Rick Salomon in 2002, and to photographer Kurt Iswarienko from 2011 until divorce proceedings finalized around the time of her passing. She was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 1999 and was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015.
