Holly Marie Combs

Holly Marie Combs Ryan is an American former actress born on December 3, 1973, in San Diego, California. She gained early recognition for playing Kimberly Brock in the CBS television series Picket Fences and landed her first leading film role in the slasher Dr. Giggles. She achieved widespread prominence starring as Piper Halliwell in the fantasy drama series Charmed and later portrayed Ella Montgomery in the drama thriller series Pretty Little Liars.

Combs is of Irish descent. Her biological parents were teenagers when she was born, and they separated two years after marrying. During her early childhood, she lived in several San Diego homes with her mother. At age seven, she moved to New York City, where she attended Beekman Hill Elementary and the Professional Children's School. She became a certified scuba diver at the age of 13.

She began her acting career in her teens. At age 14, she secured her first major role in the comedy-drama film Sweet Hearts Dance (1988). She followed this with roles in Oliver Stone's Born on the Fourth of July (1989), the anthology film New York Stories (1989), Hal Hartley's Simple Men (1992), and Temístocles López's Chain of Desire (1992). In 1992, she also starred as Jennifer Campbell in Dr. Giggles.

Combs achieved a major television breakthrough at age 18 when she was cast as Kimberly Brock in Picket Fences, appearing across its four seasons from 1992 to 1996. Her performance earned her a Young Artist Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. During the mid-to-late 1990s, she also appeared in several television films, including Sins of Silence (1996), Love's Deadly Triangle: The Texas Cadet Murder (1997), and Daughters (1997).

In 1998, Combs landed the lead role of Piper Halliwell in The WB series Charmed. She portrayed the middle sister among three witches, became the eldest sister following season three, and served as a producer starting in season five. She was the only cast member to appear in every episode of the series, which ran until 2006. During her time on the show, she made an uncredited cameo in Ocean's Eleven (2001) and starred in television films such as See Jane Date (2003) and Point of Entry (2007).

From 2010 to 2017, Combs played Ella Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars, initially as a series regular and later as a special guest star. Her subsequent work included co-starring in the 2015 travel documentary series Off the Map with Shannen & Holly, starring in the Hallmark film Love's Complicated (2016), and co-hosting the podcast House of Halliwell starting in 2024. In 2026, she stated on her podcast that she had retired from acting to focus on her family and restaurants.

Combs has been married three times. She married actor Bryan Travis Smith in 1993, and the couple divorced in 1997. In 2004, she married former Charmed key-grip David Donoho, with whom she has three sons, before filing for divorce in 2011. In 2019, she married restaurateur Mike Ryan in Carmel, California, gaining one stepdaughter.
