During his youth, Allen developed a strong interest in photography, cinematography, and behind-the-camera work. He secured his first paid role at age 13, performing in a small, non-speaking part for an Animal Planet documentary. Shortly after his Nickelodeon appearance, Allen was cast as Toby Cavanaugh on the ABC Family (later Freeform) series Pretty Little Liars. Following his breakthrough television role, Allen joined the cast of The CW's crime drama reboot series Walker, with his casting as Liam Walker, the brother of Cordell Walker, announced on February 19, 2020.

Beyond acting, Allen is an author and photographer who has released two photography books. His first book, life.love.beauty, was published in 2015 and became a bestseller with Ingram and Publishers Weekly. Allen described the book as a photographic voyage through his life up to that point. In 2018, he published his second book, HOLLYWOOD: Photos and Stories from Foreverland.

Allen has also engaged in music and audio projects. In 2017, he released a digital-only music single titled "Million Miles Away."
