Betty White

Betty Marion Ludden (née White; January 17, 1922 – December 31, 2021) was an American actress and comedian. A pioneer of early television with a career spanning nearly seven decades, she was known for her vast number of appearances in sitcoms, sketch comedy, and game shows. Her most prominent roles included Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls, and Elka Ostrovsky on Hot in Cleveland. Dubbed "the first lady of game shows," she was also a staple panelist and host across American game shows.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois, White was the only child of Christine Tess and Horace Logan White. Her ancestry included Greek, Danish, English, and Welsh origins. Her family moved to California during her childhood, settling in Los Angeles during the Great Depression. White attended Horace Mann Elementary School and Beverly Hills High School, graduating in 1939. Although she initially aspired to become a forest ranger, she developed an interest in performing after writing and starring in a school graduation play. Shortly after high school, she began modeling and performed on an experimental television show. During World War II, she volunteered for the American Women's Voluntary Services.

After the war, White pursued radio work and appeared on programs such as Blondie and The Great Gildersleeve, eventually landing her own radio program, The Betty White Show. In 1949, she began co-hosting the live television series Hollywood on Television, later taking over as sole host. In 1952, she co-founded Bandy Productions and created the sitcom Life with Elizabeth. Starring as the title character and producing the series, White became one of the few women in television with full creative control in front of and behind the camera. She later hosted a television talk/variety version of The Betty White Show and starred in Date with the Angels.

Throughout the 1960s and beyond, White became a regular panelist on game shows such as Password, Match Game, To Tell the Truth, Tattletales, and The $25,000 Pyramid. In 1963, she married Password host Allen Ludden. In 1983, White became the first woman to win the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show Host for Just Men!. She also spent nineteen years as a commentator for NBC's Rose Parade coverage and later hosted the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for CBS.

White achieved major acclaim for her television acting roles. She joined The Mary Tyler Moore Show during its fourth season as Sue Ann Nivens, winning two back-to-back Emmy Awards in 1975 and 1976. She later starred on NBC's The Golden Girls from 1985 to 1992 and TV Land's Hot in Cleveland from 2010 to 2015. Her late-career resurgence included a role in the 2009 romantic comedy film The Proposal and a Primetime Emmy-winning hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live in 2010.

Over her career, White received seven Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award. She was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and twice set the Guinness World Record for the longest TV career by a female entertainer. Her life and work were chronicled in the 2018 documentary Betty White: First Lady of Television.
