Following her parents' divorce, she was raised in Ontario and attended several schools, including Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School and North Toronto Collegiate Institute. Raised as a Buddhist, she competed professionally in figure skating for ten years. She began modelling during primary school, was signed by Ford Models at age 16, and later appeared in commercials. While studying child psychology at York University, she received television guest roles, leading her to drop out to pursue acting, eventually moving to Los Angeles in 2001.
Akerman made her acting debut in 1997 on the Canadian science fiction series Earth: Final Conflict. Over the next few years, she appeared in guest roles on television shows such as Relic Hunter, Doc, and Witchblade, as well as minor roles in the films The Skulls and The Utopian Society. In 2009, Akerman achieved wider recognition for her portrayal of Silk Spectre II in Zack Snyder's superhero film Watchmen, earning a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress as well as nominations for a Teen Choice Award and two Scream Awards. That same year, she co-starred in two additional box office hits: the romantic comedy film The Proposal and the ensemble comedy Couples Retreat.
Akerman continued to build a diverse filmography across multiple genres. Her subsequent feature work includes the comedy-dramas Happythankyoumoreplease and The Giant Mechanical Man, the drama The Bang Bang Club, and the comedies Wanderlust and Rock of Ages. She later earned a Fangoria Chainsaw Award nomination for her performance in the comedy horror film The Final Girls in 2015. Her other notable film projects include the critically acclaimed dramas I'll See You in My Dreams and To the Stars, as well as the box office hit Rampage.
On television, Akerman was part of the main cast of the Adult Swim comedy series Childrens Hospital from 2010 to 2016 and earned critical praise for her lead role in the ABC sitcom Trophy Wife from 2013 to 2014. She starred in the main cast of the Showtime drama series Billions from 2016 to 2019 and joined the Netflix drama series The Hunting Wives from 2025 onward. Outside of acting, Akerman hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Malmö alongside Petra Mede. In her personal life, she was married to Petalstones drummer Roberto Zincone from 2007 to 2014, with whom she has a son, and married English actor Jack Donnelly in 2018.
