Walker grew up in the Sunland neighborhood of Los Angeles alongside four younger siblings. His mother was a fashion model, and his father was a sewer contractor and former amateur boxer. His paternal grandfather also boxed and raced factory cars for Ford. Raised in a Mormon household, Walker graduated from Village Christian School in 1991 and later studied marine biology at several Southern California community colleges.
Walker began modeling as a toddler, appearing in commercial campaigns for Pampers and Showbiz Pizza. He made his television acting debut in 1984 on CBS Schoolbreak Special and subsequently appeared on shows like Highway to Heaven, Throb, and Who's the Boss?. In 1993, his role on the soap opera The Young and the Restless earned him a Youth in Film Award nomination. After making his film debut in Monster in the Closet (1986), Walker gained wider recognition in the late 1990s with roles in Pleasantville, Varsity Blues, She's All That, and The Skulls.
In 2001, Walker achieved international fame starring in the action film The Fast and the Furious, winning an MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Team. He starred in the thriller Joy Ride that same year, followed by 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003). After appearing in films such as Into the Blue, Flags of Our Fathers, Eight Below, and Takers, he returned to the Fast & Furious series for its 2009, 2011, and 2013 installments. In 2012, he launched the production company Laguna Ridge Pictures and executive produced films such as Vehicle 19, Pawn Shop Chronicles, and Hours.
Beyond acting, Walker was an avid car enthusiast who co-owned the performance shop Always Evolving and competed in the Redline Time Attack racing series. He also maintained a passion for marine biology, serving on the board of The Billfish Foundation and starring in the 2010 television series Expedition Great White. In 2010, Walker co-founded the disaster relief charity Reach Out Worldwide. He had one daughter, Meadow Rain Walker.
On November 30, 2013, Walker died at age 40 in a high-speed vehicle collision in Santa Clarita, California, while riding as a passenger in a Porsche Carrera GT. Filming for Furious 7 was incomplete at the time of his death, but the production was finished using visual effects, archive footage, and stand-ins, including his brothers Caleb and Cody. Released in 2015, the film was dedicated to his memory, and subsequent wrongful death claims filed against Porsche by his family were settled out of court.
