Sung Kang

Sung Kang, born Kang Sung-Ho on April 8, 1972, is an American actor best known for his portrayal of Han Lue across the Fast and Furious film franchise. His career gained significant recognition through his performances in both major feature films and high-profile television series. Beyond his long-running film roles, he has appeared in television productions such as the Starz drama Power and the Disney Plus miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Kang was born in Clarkston, Georgia, to immigrant parents from Korea. He spent his early youth in Gainesville, Georgia, where he was raised by his Korean mother alongside his African American stepfather. During his high school years, his family relocated to Barstow, California. He later pursued higher education at the University of California, Riverside, where he ultimately chose to follow an acting career rather than attending law school.

His break into major acting came in 2002 when director Justin Lin cast him as the aloof gang member Han Lue in Better Luck Tomorrow. That same period saw him starring as Sam Kim in the independent feature film The Motel. Kang later reteamed with Lin to reprise the character of Han in the 2006 movie The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Although the part was originally conceived as a minor appearance, Lin expanded it into a central supporting role. Drawing inspiration from classic screen stars like Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, Kang developed a distinct persona for the character that resonated strongly with audiences.

Following his breakout performance in Tokyo Drift, Kang became a recurring figure in the Fast and Furious franchise, returning for Fast and Furious, Fast Five, Fast and Furious 6, and the short film Los Bandoleros. Outside of this franchise, he secured roles in various feature films, playing an FBI agent in the 2007 Jet Li movie War, Genghis Khan's son Doran in Forbidden Warrior, and a minor character in Live Free or Die Hard. He also co-starred opposite Sylvester Stallone as Detective Taylor Kwon in the 2013 action picture Bullet to the Head.

In television, Kang played the narcissistic character President Gin Kew Yun Chun Yew Nee on a MADtv parody titled Tae Do alongside Bobby Lee. Franchise writer Chris Morgan specifically created the role of FBI Agent Tae Kim for him on the FOX crime drama Gang Related, which allowed Kang to utilize his conversational Korean language skills. He later appeared as Detective Yoshi Tanaka in the 2018 pilot episode for the Magnum P.I. reboot directed by Lin, and played John Mak on the drama series Power from 2017 to 2020.

In January 2020, Kang launched a YouTube channel titled Sung's Garage to host videos associated with his podcast of the same name. Supported by public interest generated from Los Angeles Times reporter Jen Yamato's #JusticeForHan social media campaign, Kang reunited with Lin to reprise his iconic role as Han Lue in F9 in 2021. In 2022, he portrayed the Fifth Brother in the Disney Plus miniseries Obi-Wan Kenobi and expanded his creative work by making his directorial debut with the horror comedy film Shaky Shivers.
