He subsequently gained international exposure through starring roles in American television series such as Family Law and Hidden Hills, as well as performances in both English-language feature films and Spanish-language telenovelas.

De la Fuente was born in Santiago, Chile, as the only child of Hugo de la Fuente, a chemist, and Adriana Sabarots, a homemaker of French descent. Before entering university, he served in the Chilean Air Force reserve. He later attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile to pursue a degree in civil engineering, while also maintaining his affiliation with the Chilean Air Force as an occasional performer in the Halcones aerial acrobatic troupe.

While in his sophomore year studying civil engineering, de la Fuente was discovered by a talent scout and won a national competition as Chile's next Super Teen. He quickly began acting in prime-time television, securing roles in dramas including Eclipse de Luna and a televised production of La Tía de Carlos. He also appeared on popular Chilean television shows such as the variety program Venga Conmigo, the comedy Mi Tío y Yo, and the music program Generación 2000.

In 1998, de la Fuente was contracted by Sony and Telemundo to star in Reyes y Rey, a Spanish-language remake of Starsky and Hutch. He subsequently made guest appearances on American shows including Pensacola: Wings of Gold, Family Law, and CSI: Miami. He made his feature film debut in the 2001 action movie Driven, and went on to appear in films such as Vampires: Los Muertos, Minimal Knowledge, Basic, Sueño, and Once Upon a Wedding, alongside starring in the Miami-produced telenovela Soñar No Cuesta Nada.

Throughout his career, de la Fuente has worked extensively as a television presenter. His hosting credits include MGM's Road to the Academy Awards for Latin America, the Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade, the Billboard Latin Music Awards, the World Music Awards, the Alma Awards, Premios Juventud, and several editions of the Latin Grammy Awards. He also created, wrote, executive produced, and hosted the Chilean reality series Golpe Bajo. For his performance in the independent film Minimal Knowledge, he earned the Individual Achievement Award for Best Male Actor at the Ajijic International Film Festival.

In subsequent years, de la Fuente maintained regular and recurring roles on television series such as In Plain Sight, Devious Maids, The Class, Brothers & Sisters, Private Practice, and The Nine Lives of Chloe King, while guest-starring in One on One, Ugly Betty, and the miniseries Como Ama Una Mujer. He also continued acting in Spanish-language telenovelas, including Fuego en la sangre, Corazón salvaje, and Quiero amarte.

In 2008, de la Fuente competed on the sixth season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars alongside partner Cheryl Burke, finishing in third place despite sustaining a ruptured biceps tendon during the competition. His later film projects include being cast as Ricardo De La Cruz in the romantic comedy film Switch Up.
