Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel Leroy Jackson is an American actor and film producer born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C. Widely recognized as one of the most prominent actors of his generation, the films in which he has appeared have collectively grossed more than $27 billion worldwide, making him the highest-grossing actor of all time. In 2022, he received the Academy Honorary Award in recognition of his impactful work across various film genres and generations.

Jackson grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he was raised by his mother, a factory worker and hospital buyer, along with his maternal grandparents and extended family. During childhood, he developed a stutter and managed it by pretending to be other people. He attended segregated schools, played multiple instruments in the school orchestra, and later enrolled at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. After initially studying marine biology and architecture, he switched his major to drama and co-founded the Just Us Theatre before earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972.

While attending college, Jackson became active in civil rights causes. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, he served as an usher at King's funeral and participated in an equal rights protest march. In 1969, Jackson and other students held members of the Morehouse Board of Trustees hostage to demand institutional reforms. He was convicted of unlawful confinement, suspended for two years, and temporarily relocated to Los Angeles after receiving a warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding his involvement in the black power movement.

Jackson began his professional acting career on stage, debuting in Mother Courage and Her Children in 1980 and originating roles in theater productions such as A Soldier's Play and The Piano Lesson. His early film career featured small roles in Coming to America, Goodfellas, and Jurassic Park, as well as several collaborations with director Spike Lee, including School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues, and Jungle Fever. His performance in Jungle Fever earned him a special supporting actor award at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival.

His critical breakthrough came in 1994 when he starred as Jules Winnfield in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. The role brought him international recognition, a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and an Academy Award nomination. Jackson continued collaborating with Tarantino on prominent films such as Jackie Brown, Kill Bill: Volume 2, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight. His other notable projects during the late 1990s included Die Hard with a Vengeance, A Time to Kill, Eve's Bayou, The Negotiator, and Deep Blue Sea.

Jackson achieved further global acclaim playing Jedi Master Mace Windu in the Star Wars prequel trilogy from 1999 to 2005. He also took on the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in eleven feature films as well as television series like Secret Invasion, What If...?, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Additionally, he voiced Lucius Best, also known as Frozone, in the animated films The Incredibles and Incredibles 2.

Throughout his career, Jackson has starred in numerous major motion pictures across multiple genres, including Unbreakable, Shaft, XXX, Coach Carter, Snakes on a Plane, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kong: Skull Island, and Glass. In addition to his screen work, he returned to Broadway in 2011 to portray Martin Luther King Jr. in The Mountaintop and again in 2022 as Doaker Charles in The Piano Lesson, receiving a Tony Award nomination. Jackson was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000.
