Pedro Pascal

José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal is a Chilean and American actor recognized for his screen and stage portrayals, particularly as adoptive parental figures. Following nearly two decades of minor stage and television appearances, he achieved global stardom through major television and film roles. His achievements include an Actor Award alongside nominations for a Golden Globe Award and four Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2023, Time magazine listed him among the 100 most influential people in the world.

Pascal was born on April 2, 1975, in Santiago, Chile, to a child psychologist mother and a reproductive endocrinologist father. Due to political unrest following the overthrow of President Salvador Allende by General Augusto Pinochet, his parents were classified as state enemies. His family escaped Chile when he was nine months old, staying briefly in Venezuela and Denmark before establishing residence in the United States. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and Orange County, California. Pascal studied performance at the Orange County School of the Arts and later earned a degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1997. He took his mother's family name professionally following her passing.

During the early stage of his career, Pascal held guest parts on several television shows, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NYPD Blue, The Good Wife, Nurse Jackie, and Homeland. To make ends meet during lean financial periods, he worked as a restaurant server and took on theater roles with organizations such as New York City's LAByrinth Theater Company. He made his feature film debut in the 2005 movie Sisters and later engaged in theatrical writing and directing, including directing the play Killing Play at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.

Pascal's career breakthrough arrived in 2014 when he played Prince Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of HBO's fantasy series Game of Thrones, a performance that earned critical praise and brought him widespread attention. Soon after, he starred as DEA officer Javier Peña in the Netflix drama series Narcos from 2015 to 2017, taking on central acting and narration duties in its final season. During this era, he also appeared in feature films such as The Great Wall, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Equalizer 2, Prospect, and If Beale Street Could Talk.

In 2019, Pascal achieved further prominence after being cast as the title character, Din Djarin, in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian. He subsequently landed the role of Joel Miller in HBO's 2023 video game adaptation The Last of Us. His portrayals in both shows solidified an ongoing reputation for depicting protector and fatherly figures. His performance in The Last of Us garnered broad praise and multiple honors, including an Actor Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series.

Alongside his television work, Pascal made his Broadway debut as Edmund in a 2019 production of King Lear. His film portfolio expanded with appearances in Wonder Woman 1984, We Can Be Heroes, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and The Bubble. His additional projects include voice and live-action roles in films such as The Wild Robot, Gladiator II, Materialists, The Mandalorian and Grogu, and depicting Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in Marvel Cinematic Universe releases starting with The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Avengers: Doomsday.
