T.R. Knight

Theodore Raymond Knight, born March 26, 1973, is an American actor best known for his role as Dr. George O'Malley on the ABC medical drama television series Grey's Anatomy. His performance on the long-running show earned him a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award. Throughout his career, Knight has maintained a prolific presence across television, Broadway, and Off-Broadway stage productions.

Knight was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he became involved with the Guthrie Theater at the age of twelve. He attended Annunciation Catholic School for grades K through 8. As a freshman, he received the Conners Foundation Scholarship and served as an apprentice at the Children's Theatre Company. During his youth, he also worked alongside his brother at a local Red Owl supermarket.

After graduating high school from the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, Knight briefly enrolled at the University of St. Thomas. He left the university after securing leading roles at the Guthrie Theater. Knight later relocated to New York City to build his career as a stage actor.

In New York, Knight performed in various high-profile theatrical productions. He appeared opposite Patti LuPone in the 2001 Broadway revival of Noises Off and played Damis in Tartuffe in 2003. His performance in the 2003 Off-Broadway production of Scattergood earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play. He also starred in the 2004 Off-Broadway drama Boy at Primary Stages, and was a regular cast member on the short-lived 2003 CBS television series Charlie Lawrence.

Knight achieved widespread public recognition in 2005 when he was cast as surgical intern Dr. George O'Malley on Grey's Anatomy. His character's progression to resident status and interactions with colleagues formed a focal point of the series. Although he originally expected to stay for one season, Knight remained until the conclusion of the fifth season in 2009, later returning briefly in 2020. His departure in 2009 followed a breakdown in communication with executive producer Shonda Rhimes, a reduction in screen time, and his decision to come out as gay. His performance earned a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2007.

Following his primary run on Grey's Anatomy, Knight continued working in prominent theater and screen projects. He played Leo Frank in the musical Parade at the Mark Taper Forum in 2009, and returned to Broadway in 2010 opposite Patrick Stewart in A Life in the Theatre. He later played Johnny Clayton in the 2016 sci-fi series 11.22.63 and voiced Sir Cedric in the 2019 animated series The Bravest Knight.

In his personal life, Knight publicly came out as gay in 2006. On October 7, 2013, he married ballet dancer and writer Patrick B. Leahy in Hudson, New York.
