Geena Davis

Virginia Elizabeth "Geena" Davis is an American actor known for her work across film and television. She achieved prominent roles in comedy, drama, and horror films, earning major accolades including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award.

Davis was born on January 21, 1956, in Wareham, Massachusetts, to Lucille, a teacher's assistant, and William F. Davis, a civil engineer and church deacon. She grew up with an older brother, Danforth. Interested in music from an early age, she played piano, flute, and church organ, and was a high school cheerleader. She spent time as an exchange student in Sandviken, Sweden, becoming fluent in Swedish. Davis attended New England College before transferring to Boston University. She later worked as a window mannequin model for Ann Taylor and signed with the Zoli Agency.

Davis began her screen acting career with a role in the satirical romantic comedy Tootsie in 1982. She subsequently appeared in television series such as Buffalo Bill and Sara, alongside guest roles in shows like Knight Rider and Family Ties. Her film profile grew with the science-fiction horror film The Fly in 1986 and the fantasy comedy Beetlejuice in 1988. Later in 1988, she starred in the romantic drama The Accidental Tourist, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She established herself as a leading lady in the road film Thelma & Louise in 1991, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She followed this success with the sports drama A League of Their Own in 1992, earning a Golden Globe nomination. Following roles in films such as Hero, Angie, and Speechless, Davis starred in Cutthroat Island in 1995, directed by her husband Renny Harlin. The film was a major box office failure, preceding a period of reduced film activity.

In 1999, Davis took on the role of Eleanor Little in the family comedy Stuart Little, a role she reprised in two sequels. She later starred as the first female president of the United States in the television series Commander in Chief from 2005 to 2006, winning a Golden Globe Award for her performance. Her subsequent screen credits include the films Accidents Happen, Marjorie Prime, and television series such as Grey's Anatomy, The Exorcist, and the Netflix series The Boroughs.

In 2004, Davis launched the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media to promote female representation in the entertainment industry. Through this organization, she established the annual Bentonville Film Festival in 2015 to support diversity in film, and executive produced the 2018 documentary This Changes Everything. Her advocacy and career contributions were recognized with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2019 and the Governors Award in 2022.
