Sandra Miju Oh is a Canadian and American actress. She is best known for her television roles as Rita Wu in Arliss, Dr. Cristina Yang in Grey's Anatomy, and Eve Polastri in Killing Eve. Across her career, she has received two Golden Globe Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Primetime Emmy Award from 14 nominations. Oh was born on July 20, 1971, in Nepean, Ontario, to South Korean immigrants. She grew up with two siblings in a Christian household. She began ballet at age four and acting at age ten. While attending high school, she participated in drama, school plays, and the Canadian Improv Games, and founded an environmental club. Rejecting a journalism scholarship to Carleton University, she studied drama at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal.
After graduating in 1993, Oh appeared in a stage production of David Mamet's Oleanna in London, Ontario. She earned recognition for her early roles in Canadian biopics and films, including The Diary of Evelyn Lau and Double Happiness, winning a Genie Award for Best Actress for the latter. She won a second Best Actress Genie Award for Last Night (1998), and held roles in films such as Bean (1997) and Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000).
From 1996 to 2002, Oh played Rita Wu in the HBO comedy series Arliss. In 2005, she was cast as Dr. Cristina Yang on the ABC medical series Grey's Anatomy. Her work on the show earned her a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and five consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations before leaving the series in 2014. During this period, she also appeared in films including Sideways (2004), Hard Candy (2005), and Rabbit Hole (2010).
In 2018, Oh starred as Eve Polastri in the spy thriller series Killing Eve, running through 2022. Her performance led to a Golden Globe Award, a SAG Award, and a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the first actress of Asian descent nominated in that category. In 2021, she starred in and executive produced the Netflix series The Chair.
Oh's voice credits include animated shows such as She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Invincible, alongside films such as Raya and the Last Dragon and Turning Red. She has also achieved notable hosting milestones, including co-hosting the 76th Golden Globe Awards in 2019 and hosting Saturday Night Live in March 2019.
Oh became a United States citizen in 2018. Her honors include an induction into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2011 and an appointment as an officer of the Order of Canada in 2022. In 2023, she starred in the film Quiz Lady, and she was cast in the 2025 film Good Fortune.
