Giancarlo Esposito

Giancarlo Giuseppe Alessandro Esposito is an American actor and director widely recognized for portraying Gus Fring in the crime drama series Breaking Bad and its prequel Better Call Saul. For his performance as the methamphetamine kingpin, he earned two Critics' Choice Television Award wins for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series alongside three Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Esposito was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to an Italian stagehand and carpenter father and an American opera and nightclub singer mother from Alabama. He spent his early childhood in Rome, Italy, before his family relocated to Manhattan, New York. He later attended Elizabeth Seton College in New York, where he earned a two-year degree in radio and television communications.

He began performing at a young age, making his Broadway debut in the 1968 musical Maggie Flynn. Early in his career, he sang the original theme song for The Electric Company, appeared on Sesame Street, and joined the cast of the 1981 production Merrily We Roll Along. During the 1980s, he built his resume with television appearances on Miami Vice and Spenser: For Hire, alongside film roles in productions such as Taps, Maximum Overdrive, and Trading Places.

Esposito achieved a major career breakthrough in 1988 as a fraternity leader in director Spike Lee's film School Daze. This marked the beginning of an extensive collaboration with Lee, leading to prominent roles in Do the Right Thing, Mo' Better Blues, and Malcolm X. Throughout the 1990s, he appeared in independent and mainstream films such as Night on Earth, Fresh, Smoke, King of New York, The Usual Suspects, Bob Roberts, and Waiting to Exhale.

His television career expanded with a major role as federal agent Mike Giardello in Homicide: Life on the Street. In 2002, he starred in the television legal drama Girls Club, a role he credited as a personal turning point that led to playing authority figures. Esposito expanded into directing with his 2008 feature film debut Gospel Hill, which he also produced and starred in, and returned to Broadway that same year in an all-Black staging of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Following his acclaimed work on Breaking Bad, Esposito secured high-profile roles across numerous television series. He played Sidney Glass and the Magic Mirror in Once Upon a Time, Tom Neville in Revolution, Dr. Edward Ruskins in Dear White People, Stan Edgar in The Boys, Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. in Godfather of Harlem. He also starred in productions such as Kaleidoscope, The Gentlemen, The Residence, Westworld, and Poker Face.

Beyond live-action screen performances, Esposito voiced the character Akela in the 2016 film remake of The Jungle Book and performed in animated series and video games, notably portraying villain Antón Castillo in Far Cry 6. His film work continued with roles in Okja, Rabbit Hole, Megalopolis, MaXXXine, and Captain America: Brave New World. In 2024, he released his first graphic novel, titled The Venetian.
