Theo James

Theodore Peter James Kinnaird Taptiklis, born December 16, 1984, is an English actor and producer. He gained widespread recognition playing Tobias Eaton in the Divergent film series from 2014 to 2016. His feature film career includes roles in the horror entries Underworld: Awakening and Underworld: Blood Wars, the science fiction project Archive, and a dual role in the dark comedy The Monkey. On television, he has appeared in Golden Boy, The Time Traveler's Wife, The White Lotus, and the action comedy series The Gentlemen.

James was born in High Wycombe, England, to Philip Taptiklis, a New Zealand business consultant, and Jane Taptiklis, who worked for the National Health Service. His family background includes Scottish ancestry and a paternal grandfather who was a Syrian-Greek refugee during World War II. Raised in Askett alongside four older siblings, he attended Aylesbury Grammar School, earned an undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Nottingham, and completed his acting training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

While in his final year of drama school, James was cast in You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and named a "Star of Tomorrow" by Screen International in 2009. He made his television debut in 2010 with A Passionate Woman and Downton Abbey. He subsequently starred in the horror series Bedlam, the miniseries Room at the Top, and the feature comedy The Inbetweeners Movie. In 2012, he joined the Underworld franchise as David in Underworld: Awakening, a role he later reprised as the male lead in Underworld: Blood Wars. He also led the 2013 crime drama series Golden Boy.

James achieved his major breakthrough playing Tobias "Four" Eaton in the 2014 feature Divergent, performing his own stunts and returning for its sequels, Insurgent and Allegiant. His subsequent film credits included The Benefactor, London Fields, How It Ends, and Backstabbing for Beginners, which he also executive produced. In 2019, he founded his production company Untapped, executive produced and starred in Lying and Stealing, and portrayed Sidney Parker in the first season of the period drama Sanditon.

In 2020, James produced and starred in the sci-fi movie Archive. He went on to lead the 2022 romance series The Time Traveler's Wife and joined the second season of the dark comedy series The White Lotus, earning a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for his role. In 2024, he took the main role of Edward "Eddie" Horniman in Guy Ritchie's series The Gentlemen. He later played twin brothers in the 2025 comedy horror feature The Monkey.

Outside of acting, James was the singer and guitarist for the London-based band Shere Khan until 2012. He became a brand ambassador for Hugo Boss fragrances in 2015 and appeared in Range Rover advertisements in 2024 and 2025. A supporter of the UN High Council on Refugees since 2016, he became a Goodwill Ambassador in 2024. James married actress Ruth Kearney in 2018 after meeting at drama school. The couple has two children and divides their time between London and Venice Beach, California.
