Joanne Froggatt is a British actress born on 23 August 1980. She gained widespread recognition for playing Anna Bates in the period drama series Downton Abbey from 2010 to 2015. Her performance in the show earned her three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2014. Additionally, she starred as Laura Nielson in the thriller series Liar from 2017 to 2020 and subsequently joined the main cast of the drama series MobLand as Jan De Souza.

Froggatt was raised in the village of Littlebeck in North Yorkshire. Her parents ran a corner shop before establishing a smallholding near Whitby to raise rare-breed sheep. After participating in a local drama group in Scarborough, she left home at age 13 to attend the Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

She made her television debut in 1996 on the police series The Bill and soon achieved wider recognition playing teenage mother Zoe Tattersall on the soap opera Coronation Street from 1997 to 1998. In 1999, she appeared in the prison drama Bad Girls as Rachel Hicks. During the mid-2000s, she took on leading roles in several television films, including Danielle Cable: Eyewitness in 2003, Island at War in 2004, See No Evil: The Moors Murders in 2006, and Murder in the Outback in 2007.

Froggatt made her feature film debut in 2010 starring as a soldier dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder in In Our Name, a performance that earned her the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Her television credits during this era included appearances in Life on Mars, Robin Hood, Spooks: Code 9, and Moving On. She also performed on the London stage in a 2007 production of All About My Mother at the Old Vic Theatre.

Following her rise to international prominence on Downton Abbey, she reprised her character in the show's 2019 feature film adaptation. Her other film projects include Filth, Still Life, A Street Cat Named Bob, Starfish, and Mary Shelley. On television, she voiced the character of Wendy in the updated Bob the Builder series, starred in the two-part drama Dark Angel, and appeared in the series Last Light. In 2019, she returned to the London stage in the thriller play Alys, Always at the Bridge Theatre.

In addition to her acting work, Froggatt became an ambassador for the Plan UK campaign "Because I Am a Girl" in 2013. She married James Cannon in October 2012, and the couple separated in 2020 before later divorcing. She gave birth to a daughter in September 2024.
