Janet McTeer

Janet McTeer is an English actress recognised for her expansive body of work across theatre, film, and television, encompassing both contemporary and classical period dramas. Over her career, she has earned major honours including a Tony Award, an Olivier Award, and a Golden Globe Award, alongside nominations for two Academy Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award. In recognition of her contributions to drama, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008.

Born on August 5, 1961, in Wallsend, North Tyneside, McTeer spent her youth in York. She attended Queen Anne Grammar School for Girls and worked at local venues, including the Theatre Royal, York Minster, and the Old Starre Inn. She gained early performance experience with the Rowntree Players at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre before pursuing formal dramatic training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Following her graduation, she launched her professional stage career with the Royal Exchange Theatre.

McTeer made her professional stage debut in 1984, earning an Olivier Award nomination for Best Newcomer two years later for her role in The Grace of Mary Traverse. In 1996, her portrayal of Nora Helmer in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House in the West End won her an Olivier Award, and she subsequently received a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Theatre World Award when the production moved to Broadway in 1997. Her acclaimed theatrical career includes Tony-nominated performances in Mary Stuart and Bernhardt/Hamlet, as well as roles in God of Carnage, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and an all-female production of The Taming of the Shrew. In 2023, she starred in Phaedra at the National Theatre, earning another Olivier nomination.

McTeer debuted on film in 1986's Half Moon Street, followed by appearances in Wuthering Heights, Carrington, Velvet Goldmine, and Songcatcher. Her breakout film role came in 1999 with Tumbleweeds, which earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She achieved a second Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Hubert Page in the 2011 feature Albert Nobbs. Her subsequent film credits include roles in The Divergent Series, The Exception, and The Menu.

Her television credits are equally broad. McTeer starred in the title role of the ITV drama series The Governor and played Vita Sackville-West in Portrait of a Marriage. In 2009, she earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for portraying Clementine Churchill in HBO's Into the Storm. She later joined the cast of Damages for its final season, starred as Jacquetta of Luxembourg in The White Queen—receiving a Golden Globe nomination—and appeared in the spy miniseries The Honourable Woman. Her television work also includes Jessica Jones, Sorry for Your Loss, and a starring role as cartel attorney Helen Pierce in Ozark.

McTeer married poet and fashion consultant Joseph Coleman in 2010, and the couple resides in Maine. Her recent screen projects include the feature film Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and an upcoming portrayal of Minerva McGonagall in the HBO television adaptation of the Harry Potter series.
