Carrie-Anne Moss

Carrie-Anne Moss is a Canadian actress born on August 21, 1967. She gained international prominence for her role as Trinity in The Matrix film series. Throughout her career, she has performed in numerous feature films and television productions, receiving accolades including an Independent Spirit Award along with nominations for Gemini, Genie, and Canadian Screen Awards.

Moss was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, to Barbara and Melvyn Moss, and grew up in Vancouver with her mother and older brother, Brooke. Her mother named her after the Hollies' 1967 song "Carrie Anne". At age eleven, she joined the Vancouver children's musical theatre, and during her senior year, she toured Europe with the Magee Secondary School Choir.

Her acting career began in Spain with her first television role in Dark Justice. Moving to Los Angeles in 1992, she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and appeared in series such as Models Inc. and Matrix. During the 1990s, she made guest appearances on shows like Street Justice, Baywatch, F/X: The Series, and Due South, earning a Gemini Award nomination for the latter. She also appeared in films including Flashfire, The Soft Kill, Tough Guy, Lethal Tender, Sabotage, and The Secret Life of Algernon.

Moss achieved her breakthrough playing Trinity in the 1999 science-fiction film The Matrix, a role that demanded extensive physical testing and launched her into global recognition. She earned nominations for a Saturn Award and an MTV Movie Award for her performance. Moss reprised Trinity in the 2003 sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, provided voice work for related spin-offs, and returned to the franchise in The Matrix Resurrections (2021).

In 2000, Moss starred in Chocolat, Red Planet, The Crew, and Memento, winning the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her role as Natalie in Memento. Her subsequent film work in the decade included Suspect Zero, The Chumscrubber, Fido, Snow Cake—for which she received a Genie Award nomination—Disturbia, Normal, Fireflies in the Garden, and Love Hurts.

During the 2010s and 2020s, Moss appeared in films such as Unthinkable, Silent Hill: Revelation, Knife Fight, Compulsion, Pompeii, Elephant Song, Frankenstein, The Bye Bye Man, and Die Alone, earning a Canadian Screen Award nomination for the latter. Her television credits included roles in Chuck, Vegas, and Humans, as well as voice work for the video games Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. Between 2015 and 2019, she portrayed attorney Jeri Hogarth in Marvel's Jessica Jones on Netflix, reprising the role in Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders.

Moss married Canadian actor Steven Roy in 1999; they have two sons, Owen and Kaden, and a daughter, Frances Beatrice. As of 2020, the family lives in New Hampshire. Moss is also the founder of Annapurna Living, a lifestyle brand focused on mindfulness and meditation.
