Faran Tahir

Faran Haroon Tahir is a Pakistani-American actor recognized for his work across feature films, television, and theater. He is best known for portraying prominent characters in major cinema releases, including the antagonist Raza in Iron Man, Captain Richard Robau in Star Trek, and President Patel in Elysium. Beyond his screen roles, Tahir took on the title role in a 2016 production of Othello presented by the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C.

Tahir was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Pakistan before returning to the United States in 1980. He belongs to a prominent artistic family; his father, Naeem Tahir, is an actor and writer, while his mother, Yasmeen Tahir, was a well-known voice on Radio Pakistan. His maternal grandparents were writers Imtiaz Ali Taj and Hijab Imtiaz Ali, the first Muslim female pilot. Additionally, his brother Ali Tahir acts in the sitcom Teen Bata Teen, and his brother Mehran Tahir works as a producer for Hum TV.

Tahir initially studied business economics at the University of California, Berkeley, before shifting to dramatic arts and graduating with a degree in theatre. He subsequently attended Harvard University, earning a Master of Fine Arts through the American Repertory Theater's Institute for Advanced Theater Training.

Tahir made his film debut playing Nathoo in Disney's 1994 live-action movie The Jungle Book. He went on to appear in films like Picture Perfect, Anywhere But Here, and Charlie Wilson's War, as well as the 1999 independent movie ABCD in the male lead role. He gained wider visibility with major roles in Iron Man, Star Trek, and Elysium. His cinematic credits also include the horror movie Jinn and the 2005 Sci-Fi Channel original film Manticore.

On television, Tahir has appeared in a wide variety of roles. He guest-starred in series such as Lost, 24, Alias, Monk, The West Wing, and Grey's Anatomy. He played recurring or notable characters like Frank in Dallas, Commander in Supergirl, Rhys Bashir in American Crime, Captain Nemo in Once Upon a Time, and Mallick in 12 Monkeys. After appearing in the JAG episodes that introduced NCIS, he later featured in NCIS: Los Angeles.

In 2021, Tahir married model, actor, and photographer Zara Tareen; the marriage lasted four months, with the divorce finalized in 2023. Professionally, he appeared on the web show Speak Your Heart With Samina Peerzada in Karachi in 2019 and featured in a June 2024 PakWheels vlog alongside his Umrao Ayyar co-star Ali Kazmi.
