Tahir was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Pakistan before returning to the United States in 1980. He belongs to a prominent artistic family; his father, Naeem Tahir, is an actor and writer, while his mother, Yasmeen Tahir, was a well-known voice on Radio Pakistan. His maternal grandparents were writers Imtiaz Ali Taj and Hijab Imtiaz Ali, the first Muslim female pilot. Additionally, his brother Ali Tahir acts in the sitcom Teen Bata Teen, and his brother Mehran Tahir works as a producer for Hum TV.
Tahir initially studied business economics at the University of California, Berkeley, before shifting to dramatic arts and graduating with a degree in theatre. Tahir made his film debut playing Nathoo in Disney's 1994 live-action movie The Jungle Book. He went on to appear in films like Picture Perfect, Anywhere But Here, and Charlie Wilson's War, as well as the 1999 independent movie ABCD in the male lead role.
