Lance Reddick

Lance Solomon Reddick was an American actor and musician, recognized for his command of authoritative screen roles across television, film, and video games. Over a career spanning several decades, he gained widespread prominence playing high-profile law enforcement and leadership figures in major television dramas and popular movie franchises.

Born on June 7, 1962, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Dorothy Gee and Solomon Reddick, he spent his youth attending the Friends School of Baltimore. He pursued an extensive education in music, studying at the Peabody Institute and enrolling in a summer program at The Walden School. He later earned a Bachelor of Music degree in classical music composition from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. After relocating to Boston during the 1980s, he shifted his focus toward drama, ultimately receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama in 1994.

Reddick's television career took off with a recurring appearance as Detective Johnny Basil in the fourth season of the HBO prison series Oz. He achieved a major career breakthrough when he was cast as Cedric Daniels on HBO's acclaimed drama The Wire, a role he played from 2002 to 2008. During this period, he also ventured into music, releasing his debut album, Contemplations & Remembrances, in 2007. In 2008, he joined the cast of Lost as Matthew Abaddon while simultaneously securing a regular starring role on the sci-fi series Fringe as FBI division head Phillip Broyles, appearing on the show through 2013.

Continuing his television success, Reddick portrayed Chief Irvin Irving in the Amazon Prime series Bosch from 2014 to 2020. His movie work included playing General Caulfield in the 2013 thriller White House Down, as well as roles in The Domestics, Monster Party, Angel Has Fallen, and Godzilla vs. Kong. On the big screen, he earned widespread recognition as Charon, the hotel concierge in the John Wick action franchise, a character he portrayed across four films starting in 2014. Additionally, he acted in and co-produced the web series DR0NE and appeared as a commercial spokesman for Cree LED Bulbs.

Reddick expanded his work into voice and motion-capture acting for major video game franchises. He lent his voice and physical likeness to characters such as Martin Hatch in Quantum Break, Commander Zavala in Destiny and Destiny 2, Sylens in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, and the title character in Hellboy Web of Wyrd. In 2022, he portrayed Albert Wesker and his various clones in the Netflix live-action series Resident Evil.

Reddick passed away suddenly at his home in Studio City, Los Angeles, on March 17, 2023, at the age of 60. Following his passing, several projects featuring his work were released posthumously, including the Disney+ adaptation Percy Jackson and the Olympians, where his guest portrayal of the Greek god Zeus earned him a nomination for a Children's and Family Emmy Award. His contributions to the entertainment industry were further honored by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, which established the Lance Reddick Legacy Award at the Saturn Awards in his memory.
