Schulz was raised in Manhattan's East Village by his mother, Sandra Cameron, a Scottish former ballroom dancer, and his father, Larry Schulz, a reporter and military veteran. He attended New York City public schools before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. During his college years in California, Schulz began performing stand-up comedy at local open mics. Upon returning to New York City, he refined his craft across local comedy clubs, making his international festival debut at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in Scotland in 2008.

Schulz first gained television prominence in the early 2010s as a regular panelist on MTV2 series such as Guy Code, Girl Code, and Guy Court. He transitioned into acting with roles in the IFC sitcom Benders, Amazon Prime's Sneaky Pete, and HBO's Crashing, as well as feature films including You People and The Underdoggs.
