Anthony Head

Anthony Stewart Head (20 February 1954 – 1 June 2026) was an English actor and singer who gained prominence in musical theatre before achieving widespread television fame. He first became widely recognized in the United Kingdom during the late 1980s for starring in a series of coffee commercials. He subsequently earned international recognition for his portrayals of Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Prime Minister in Little Britain, King Uther Pendragon in Merlin, and Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso. He was also known for his distinct baritone voice, which he lent to numerous advertising campaigns and radio broadcasts.

Head was born in Camden Town, London, to a documentary filmmaker father and an actress mother. Raised alongside his older brother, who also became an actor and singer, Head performed in a childhood production at age six after developing an early passion for acting. Both brothers eventually played the role of Freddie Trumper in the West End musical Chess. Head received his formal education at Sunbury Grammar School in Surrey before undergoing dramatic training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

In the late 1970s, Head began his professional career appearing in a stage production of Godspell and making his television screen debut in Enemy at the Door. During the 1980s, he contributed musical vocals to acts such as Red Box and Two Way, and made an appearance on Not the Nine O'Clock News. Between 1987 and 1993, he achieved household fame appearing alongside Sharon Maughan in the Gold Blend couple advertisements for Nescafé. Around this period, he starred as Frank N. Furter in West End revivals of The Rocky Horror Show and released the single "Sweet Transvestite."

Head appeared in the pilot episode of Jonathan Creek before landing his breakout international role as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which required him to relocate to the United States during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He later starred in the comedy-drama Manchild, played the Prime Minister in the comedy series Little Britain, and took on several roles across the Doctor Who franchise, including playing the villainous school headmaster Mr. Finch on television and narrating Doctor Who Confidential. His film roles during this era included appearances in Persuasion, Sparkle, and the musical Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Head subsequently joined the main cast of the BBC drama series Merlin as King Uther Pendragon. His later feature film credits included Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Iron Lady, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, and Despite the Falling Snow. On radio, he voiced central characters in Bleak Expectations and Cabin Pressure, and joined the soap opera The Archers. In his late career, he made appearances in Motherland, Bridgerton, and Upgraded, and co-starred in the comedy series Ted Lasso as team owner Rupert Mannion.

Over his career, Head released collaborative and solo musical recordings, including the albums Music for Elevators and Staring at the Sun. He won the Best Supporting Actor award at the 2016 Prague Independent Film Festival and received nominations for a Monte-Carlo TV Festival Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In 2023, he reprised his role as Giles for the audio series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

Head met his long-term partner, animal welfare advocate Sarah Fisher, in 1982. The couple resided at Tilley Farm in Farmborough, Somerset, and had two daughters who both entered the acting profession. Following Fisher's death in late 2025, Head died on 1 June 2026 from complications of pneumonia at the age of 72.
