Hunt graduated from the theater program at Illinois State University in 1996. While enrolled, he performed in the Illinois Shakespeare Festival and took part in an intensive master class led by actress Judith Ivey. Following his studies, he trained at The Second City in Chicago before moving to Amsterdam to join the comedy and improv group Boom Chicago. Between 1998 and 2008, he wrote and performed regularly with the troupe, serving as head writer and feature performer for Comedy Central News in the Netherlands. During his tenure, he collaborated with comedians Jason Sudeikis, Jordan Peele, and Seth Meyers, co-creating duo shows for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
After returning to the United States, Hunt developed Five Years in Amsterdam, a comedic solo show reflecting on his time living in Europe and his personal upbringing. He performed the piece across several notable venues, including the 2007 Comedy Festival in Aspen, Colorado. That same year, he joined the Sacred Fools Theater Company. His performance as the lead in the musical Savin' Up for Saturday Night earned him the 2010 Ovation Award for Lead Actor in a Musical.
In 2013, Hunt wrote and starred in Absolutely Filthy, a dark comedy parody inspired by the Peanuts comic strip. Originating as a series of short late-night sketches for Sacred Fools, the full-length play won several accolades, including top comedic and acting honors at the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival, the 2014 FringeNYC, and the 2014 LA Weekly Theater Awards.
Hunt made television appearances on series such as Reno 911!, Parks and Recreation, Community, and How I Met Your Mother before making his major film debut in 2013's We're the Millers. He subsequently appeared in Horrible Bosses 2 and contributed as a performer and writer on Key & Peele, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for co-writing the show's Super Bowl Special. He also co-wrote and co-starred in an award-winning NBC Sports Premier League campaign alongside Sudeikis, and featured in the 2015 online series Thank You and Sorry.
In addition to live theater and television, Hunt provided the voices for DJ Travis and Detective Perry in Fallout 4. His television work expanded into youth programming on the Disney Channel and Disney XD, along with national commercial appearances for brands including GEICO and Volkswagen. In 2020, he co-created and joined the main cast of Ted Lasso. His later live projects include the solo stage shows Still Got It in 2016 and The Movement You Need in 2023. In 2026, he introduced Justin Bieber during the FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show performing in character as Coach Beard.
