About Tan France
Tanveer Wasim France is a British-American fashion designer, entrepreneur, and television presenter. He achieved global prominence as the fashion expert on the rebooted Netflix reality series Queer Eye. Beyond this breakout role, he has hosted the web series Dressing Funny, co-hosted the competition series Next in Fashion, and presented television projects in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
France was born Tanveer Wasim Safdar in Doncaster, England, on 20 April 1983, to Muslim immigrant parents of Pakistani descent. His interest in garment creation began during his youth while spending time at his grandparents' denim factory in Bury, where Disney-themed apparel was produced. He learned to sew and construct garments at a young age, assembling a denim jacket by age thirteen. After completing his secondary education at Hall Cross School, he pursued fashion studies at Doncaster College before relocating to Manchester and London.
He began his professional fashion career working as a designer and director for major retail brands, including Zara, Selfridges, and Bershka. France initially focused on menswear before transitioning into women's apparel. In 2008, he expanded his career to the United States, living in New York City before permanently emigrating in 2015. He served as a company director at Shade Clothing and launched his own label, Kingdom & State, in 2011, which featured apparel tailored to meet Mormon clothing guidelines. He later established two smaller apparel brands and served as co-founder, designer, and CEO of Rachel Parcell Inc., with his creations sold through retailers such as ModCloth, Forever 21, and Nordstrom.
After selling his clothing businesses, France transitioned to television when he was selected as the fashion expert for Netflix's Queer Eye reboot, which premiered in February 2018. His media presence expanded as he was named co-host of Next in Fashion alongside Alexa Chung and fronted the web series Dressing Funny. He later presented the 2022 documentary Beauty and the Bleach for BBC Two, examining colourism, and began hosting Say Yes to the Dress with Tan France in 2023. Additionally, he appeared in Taylor Swift's music video for You Need to Calm Down and won a special charity edition of The Great British Bake Off in 2020.
France released his New York Times bestselling memoir, Naturally Tan, in June 2019, detailing his experiences growing up as a South Asian, gay Muslim man in England. He has collaborated on commercial collections, including an eyewear line with Eyebuydirect and a home decor and food line with Etsy sellers. He has also served as a Middle East columnist for GQ, a monthly stylist for Express, and an instructor on the MasterClass streaming platform. In July 2020, France and his Queer Eye co-hosts received an Emmy nomination for Best Hosting of a Reality or Competition Program.
France holds dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States, becoming a naturalized American citizen in June 2020. He resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his husband, Rob France, whom he married in London and later in New York City. The couple has two sons born via surrogate in 2021 and 2023. France has been vocal about his experiences with racism, colourism, and Islamophobia, and in 2019 he launched an Instagram account called Shaded to promote diversity and highlight people of colour.
