He later achieved wider recognition through his role as Jesus Adams Foster in the Freeform drama series The Fosters and built a prominent screen presence by starring in a series of Netflix romantic comedy films, including the To All the Boys franchise, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, and The Perfect Date.
Centineo was born in Miami, Florida, and raised in Boca Raton. He is of Italian and Pennsylvania Dutch (German) descent and has an older sister. He attended BAK Middle School of the Arts and Boca Raton Community High School for ninth and tenth grade, where he played soccer. In 2012, Centineo relocated to Los Angeles and attended Agoura High School.
Centineo began his film career starring in the 2009 family movie The Gold Retrievers. He subsequently appeared in guest roles on Disney Channel sitcoms such as Shake It Up and Jessie, co-starred in the 2014 Disney Channel Original Movie How to Build a Better Boy, and was cast in the comedy pilot Growing Up and Down. In 2015, Centineo joined the main cast of ABC Family/Freeform's drama series The Fosters as Jesus Adams Foster, making his first appearance in season three. His performance on the series earned him a nomination for the Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer TV Star: Male in 2017.
Centineo expanded his television and film work by starring as Hawk Carter in the drama-thriller series Tagged, playing Johnny Sanders Jr. in the coming-of-age film SPF-18, and appearing as Camila Cabello's love interest in her "Havana" music video. In 2018, he starred as Peter Kavinsky in the Netflix film To All the Boys I've Loved Before, adapted from Jenny Han's romance novel. His performance received positive reviews and established him as a teen idol. He subsequently starred in the Netflix features Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Swiped, and The Perfect Date, and took a supporting role in the 2019 reboot of Charlie's Angels.
In 2020 and 2021, Centineo reprised his role as Peter Kavinsky in the sequels To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever. He played Albert Rothstein / Atom Smasher in the DCEU superhero film Black Adam (2022) and starred as the lead and executive producer in the Netflix spy-adventure series The Recruit (2022–2025). He was later cast in projects including the A24 war film Warfare, a Street Fighter reboot film as Ken Masters, a prequel film as a young John Rambo, and a live-action adaptation of the Gundam franchise.
In 2019, Centineo co-founded the Los Angeles–based nonprofit organization Favored Nations with Josh Heller and serves as its CEO. The 501(c)(3) entity collaborates with celebrities and influencers to raise funds for various charities and participated in a voter turnout campaign for the 2020 election. In his personal life, Centineo was in a relationship with model Alexis Ren from March 2019 to April 2020. He has also publicly discussed attaining sobriety following a period of alcohol and drug use between the ages of 17 and 21.
