Alan Ruck

Alan Douglas Ruck is an American actor known for his extensive work across feature films, television, and stage productions. He gained widespread popularity for playing the hypochondriac Cameron Frye in the 1986 comedy film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. On television, he achieved recognition for his main roles as Stuart Bondek on the sitcom Spin City and as Connor Roy on the drama series Succession.

Born on July 1, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio, Ruck was raised by a schoolteacher mother and a father who worked for a pharmaceutical company. He attended Parma Senior High School and went on to study drama at the University of Illinois, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1979. After completing his degree, he moved to Chicago to pursue stage opportunities alongside acquaintances in the theater community, securing his first acting job about a year later.

Ruck made his film debut in 1983, appearing in Bad Boys as Carl Brennan and in Class as Roger Jackson. He made his Broadway debut in 1985 in Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues alongside Matthew Broderick, while also acting in regional productions such as those at Chicago's Wisdom Bridge Theatre. Encouraged by Broderick, Ruck auditioned for Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where his existing friendship with Broderick helped him secure his breakout role.

During the late 1980s and 1990s, Ruck sustained a steady screen career. His film appearances included Three for the Road, Three Fugitives, Young Guns II, Speed, Star Trek Generations, and Twister. On television, he starred in the short-lived series Going Places and Daddy's Girls before securing a long-running role on the ABC sitcom Spin City from 1996 to 2002. In 2005, he returned to Broadway to play Leo Bloom in Mel Brooks' The Producers.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Ruck guest-starred on numerous television programs, including From the Earth to the Moon, Stargate Atlantis, Medium, Greek, Psych, Boston Legal, Fringe, Justified, Bunheads, and The Exorcist. He also took on roles in feature films such as Ghost Town, The Happening, I Love You, Beth Cooper, and Extraordinary Measures, and he reprised his Star Trek character in the fan production Of Gods and Men.

From 2018 to 2023, Ruck starred as media magnate heir Connor Roy in the HBO drama series Succession. For his performance, he received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award in 2023. He was also part of the cast that won Screen Actors Guild Awards for ensemble performance in a drama series in 2022 and 2024.

Ruck was married to actress Claudia Stefany from 1984 to 2005, with whom he has two children. In 2008, he married actress Mireille Enos after meeting her during a 2005 Broadway production of Absurd Person Singular; the couple shares two children. On October 31, 2023, Ruck was involved in a Los Angeles car crash in which his vehicle struck several cars and collided with a pizza restaurant.
