William Shatner

William Shatner is a Canadian actor and recording artist born on March 22, 1931, in Montreal, Quebec. He is best known for portraying Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise from 1966 to 1994, appearing in the original television series, its animated follow-up, and seven feature films. Beyond Star Trek, Shatner has maintained an extensive career in television, film, music, and writing.

Shatner was raised in a Conservative Jewish household in Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhood. He attended Willingdon Elementary School, West Hill High School, and the Montreal Children's Theatre. He studied economics at McGill University, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1952. During his college years, he worked as a camp counselor at a B'nai B'rith camp. McGill University later awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Letters in 2011, an honor he also received from the New England Institute of Technology in 2018.

His acting career began during college with a small role in the 1951 film The Butler's Night Off. After graduating, Shatner performed at the Mountain Playhouse in Montreal and the Canadian National Repertory Theatre in Ottawa before joining the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. He made his Broadway debut in 1956 in Tamburlaine and moved to New York City to work in American television, appearing in programs such as The Howdy Doody Show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Twilight Zone. He also appeared in major feature films, including The Brothers Karamazov (1958) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961).

In 1966, Shatner was cast as Captain James T. Kirk for Star Trek, playing the role until NBC cancelled the series in 1969. In the early 1970s, he overcame typecasting by working in B-movies, television game shows, and guest roles. He later starred as the title character in the police drama T. J. Hooker from 1982 to 1986 and hosted the reality series Rescue 911 from 1989 to 1996.

Shatner expanded his television work into comedy and drama with his role as the Big Giant Head on 3rd Rock from the Sun and his performance as attorney Denny Crane in The Practice and Boston Legal. His portrayal of Denny Crane earned him two Emmy Awards. He later starred in the travel series Better Late Than Never from 2016 to 2018 and became the host of The UnXplained in 2019.

In addition to acting, Shatner launched a musical career with his 1968 album The Transformed Man, delivering dramatic spoken recitations of song lyrics, and achieved his most successful release with Seeking Major Tom in 2011. He has authored non-fiction books about his career, co-written Star Trek novels, and created the TekWar science fiction series. In 2021, Shatner flew into space aboard the Blue Origin NS-18 sub-orbital mission, becoming the oldest person to fly in space at age 90.
